School workshops at the Living Arts Centre

School workshops are offered for students from junior kindergarten to grade 12 in both the Performing and Visual Arts. Workshops are held at the Living Arts Centre and are taught by trained arts professionals. All workshops are connected to the Ontario Curriculum and use hands-on activities and experiential learning to engage students.

Duration and cost

In-person workshops at the Living Arts Centre

All in-person workshops are 120 minutes in length and $11 per student, with a minimum booking of 18 students. Additional workshop details will be confirmed at the time of booking.

Outreach workshops at your school

Select performing arts offerings are available to book as outreach workshops at your school. Please see the workshop descriptions below for more details. All outreach workshops are 60 minutes in length. There is a flat fee of $150 per one-hour workshop with a minimum requirement of two workshops per booking. A maximum of 30 students can participate in an outreach workshop. Additional details will be confirmed at the time of booking.

Workshop descriptions

Visual Arts

Learn the basics of clay handling while experimenting with shape, form and texture. Students will explore hand-building techniques including pinch pot, slab and coil to create a variety of projects.

Discover masks from around the world while exploring the materials and methods used to make them. Students will practice the slab technique, methods for adding volume, and how to create surface texture as they work with clay to create their own unique mask.

Grades: 4 to 12

Working with a variety of materials, students will design and assemble a multi-layered and textured collograph plate to create a series of prints. Students will explore shape, texture, and line while learning printmaking techniques and experimenting with mixed-media.

Discover the tools and techniques of relief printmaking. Students will explore elements of design while carving a soft linoleum block that will be used to create their own prints. Students will take home finished prints and their carved block.

Explore the elements of art and watch shape, form, texture and colour come together. Students will create a layered relief painting inspired by landscapes and cityscapes while learning about colour mixing and the basic principles of perspective.

Explore screen printing techniques in our professional textile studio! Students will learn design fundamentals to create a basic stencil image. Using the silkscreen printing method, one-colour images will be printed in ink on paper. Each student will take home a unique print. Get the most out of this workshop by completing our pre-visit activity.

Performing Arts

Some Performing Arts workshops can be held at your school. These outreach workshops are one hour in length and cost a flat fee per hour. A minimum of two outreach workshops are required per booking. Additionally, access to school gymnasium, sound system, and designated parking spot for the instructor are required for all outreach workshop bookings.

Challenge your students to develop their self-confidence, creativity and performance skills. Students will learn theatre terminology and fundamental drama concepts. Workshops will end in a short student performance with instructor guidance.

This dance program introduces students to hip hop dance and its evolution throughout time. Students will learn fundamental dance skills and moves that reflect hip hop history while developing their presentation skills. Using dance moves learned in the workshop, students will help choreograph a final performance.

This cross-curricular workshop incorporates drama, dance, and the visual arts for an engaging experience. Students will learn basic drama and dance terminology, while developing focus, coordination, stage skills and self-confidence. Workshops will be inspired by a classic piece of children’s literature.
