HIGH FIVE® quality standard

HIGH FIVE® is Canada’s quality standard for children’s recreation, culture, and sports programs.

This standard provides recreational professionals with quality training and organizations with tools and resources to operate successful programs. This standard also includes training around mental health, competitive sports programs, and healthy aging.

The City is an Accredited Organization. We focus on children’s healthy development by providing programs with the highest recognized level of quality and safety.

All programming for children ages 4 to 12 focuses on the five Principles of Healthy Child Development:

A caring leader

The opportunity to make friends

The opportunity to play

The opportunity to master skills

The opportunity to participate

How your child benefits

HIGH FIVE helps us make a difference in children’s lives by giving them the best way to play. We’ll make sure your child feels safe and happy in our programs and that they’ll go home with new skills and friendships.

HIGH FIVE and employment

The City of Mississauga is committed to ensuring over 80% of our recreation staff are trained in the Principles of Healthy Childhood Development. Each staff member is provided with resources to help them create an inclusive and inviting environment for everyone.

If you are interested in working in recreation at the City of Mississauga, we require you to complete a PHCD (Principles of Healthy Childhood Development) training. Training provides participants with a nationally recognized certification.
