10th
Annual Doors Open Mississauga Saturday
September 28, 2013, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Guidelines for Participating
Buildings
The 10th annual Doors Open Mississauga takes place on Saturday, September
28, 2013, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participating buildings and sites are encouraged to
highlight their unique architectural, heritage, natural or cultural features and stories. Doors
Open Mississauga promises an authentic adventure that celebrates Mississaugas built form.
The 2013 edition of Doors Open will highlight artistic practices in support of the national
Culture Days celebrations by offering performance and/or exhibiting venues to our local arts
and heritage groups. It also supports the province-wide theme for Doors Open selected by the
Ontario Heritage Trust:
Doors Open Ontario 2013 Theme
The Ontario Heritage Trust will once again launch a province-wide theme for Doors Open
Ontario in 2013. The 2013 theme will provide an opportunity for communities across the province
to celebrate the relationship between heritage and the arts. Venues for the arts such as
theatres, opera houses, art galleries, artist studios, recital halls and recording studios are
all ideal site types for celebrating this years theme. Also appropriate are sites
associated with renowned artists or specific works of art. Such sites would include the homes
of famous novelists, landmarks captured in famous paintings or settings depicted in popular
songs or films.
This years theme can also be used to develop programming for participating sites. Art
sales and exhibits, workshops and demonstrations, theatrical performances and concerts are all
suitable ways to add excitement to your event. However, as in years past, communities are
invited to open all sorts of sites not just those related to the Trusts theme. All
sites of historic, architectural, natural or cultural interest are encouraged to participate in
the program.

Mississauga Civic Centre:
25 Years Seen Through Private and Public Celebrations
The Mississauga Civic Centre is the annual headquarters for Doors Open and our local Culture
Days celebrations. Its design was the result of a National Architectural Competition mandated
by City Council in 1982. The winning submission was submitted by architects Michael Kirkland
and Edward Jones of Toronto. It opened in 1987 and to this day, this building is considered one
of the pre-eminent examples of postmodernism in Canada.
In 2012, the iconic Mississauga Civic Centre building celebrated its 25th year.
On this occasion, a call invited residents of Mississauga to share their personal photos and
experiences of the Mississauga Civic Centre over the past 25 years. This 18 minute film
captures the photos in chronological sequence.
