Black History in Canada with guest speaker Channon Oyeniran

Event artwork for the Black History in Canada presentation..

This talk is held in conjunction with Unearth, Uncover, an exhibition of plaques and artworks by Peel Region students on view at the Bradley Museum inspired by OBHS's #BlackedOutHistory campaign, that calls for Black history to be included as mandatory learning in the Ontario Curriculum.

Unearth, Uncover is a project by Peel District School Board teachers and students that addresses significant moments in Black Canadian history that is left out of school history textbooks. These combined works shed light on the advocacy, resistance and strength of Black communities and claim space for the teaching of this history.

In this presentation, Channon will delve into many aspects of Black history beyond what is currently taught, including the history of Africa pre-European contact, the truth about enslavement in Canada, important Black Canadian historical figures and the OBHS #BlackedOut History campaign.

Unearth, Uncover is on view at the Bradley Museum until November 6, 2022.
