Sauga Stroke Breakers

‘Sauga Stroke Breakers (SSB) is a program that gives stroke survivors the chance to work on improving their mobility and independence. It focuses on therapeutic, recreational, and social activities that support the needs of each participant.

Through the City of Mississauga, participants will have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities, with the option to choose from land or water sessions.

Some of the interactive activities will include:

  • Therapeutic exercise on land or in the pool
  • Card games, board games & tabletop activities
  • Painting & crafts
  • Golf-putting practice
  • Table tennis, bocce, bowling
  • Video games
  • Tai Chi
  • Speech practice, articulation, and conversation
  • Guest speakers
  • Special events or outings and more…

Program information

Who can participate

If you are interested in joining this program, then you must meet the following requirements:

Participants will also need to provide their own lunch and arrange their own transportation to and from the program location.

A meet and greet with an intake interview, facility tour, and opportunity to ask questions will be scheduled with program staff.  Once complete participants may register online or in person at Mississauga Valley Community Centre.

Volunteer with the program

We are looking for volunteers who are 18 years old or older with preferred experience and a strong desire to work with older adults living with acquired physical disabilities.

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Provide participant assistance in exercise classes, fine motor skill programs, aquatic activities, and general social interaction.
  • Encourage participation during social activities and conversation during lunch.
  • Assist staff in supporting program participants in the swimming pool and program room.
  • Encourage safe independence and celebrate participant successes.
  • Support staff in the program set up and take down.
