MiWay’s bus stops are designated, accessible areas for passengers to get on and off buses. MiWay has three different styles of bus stops across our network featuring simple marked poles, standard shelters and enhanced shelters.
A bus stop is a designated place where customers board and exit the bus. Each stop is marked with a bus stop marker with a unique stop ID.
MiWay’s bus stops can be temporarily affected by construction activities and special events. When this happens, depending on how long the disruption will be, a temporary stop is set up. All temporary stops are marked with a bus stop marker showing where passengers can safely get on and off the bus.
Impacted stops have nearby signs with directions to the temporary stop.
In the event of construction or special events, routes will be detoured to avoid the impacted area. Temporary bus stops may be added along the detour route to maintain convenient service for customers.
Impacted stops and routes will have nearby signs with directions to the temporary stops and routes.
Some bus stops include a small structure to provide protection from the weather. The shelter is partially enclosed and includes seating for rider comfort. Some standard shelters also have lighting and advertising panels.
MiWay is steadily adding more standard shelters across the network with approximately 30 new shelters each year.
Standard shelters are placed at stops based on how many people take the bus on that route, how often the bus comes and what is around the stop.
An enhanced shelter bus stop is a larger structure with additional seating and a fully enclosed heated section. Some enhanced shelters also have lighting and advertising panels.
With Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program funding, MiWay is adding more enhanced bus shelters on high-ridership routes with existing or planned express services.
Enhanced shelters are typically located at express stops, terminals and transfer points between routes.
The enhanced shelter installations follow a multi-step process:
Enhanced shelters that are awaiting power installation are marked with signs indicating the electrical work is still in progress. MiWay is working closely with Alectra Utilities to expedite the process.
The 2026 enhanced shelter installations are underway for 32 selected stops along Eglinton Avenue, Mavis Road, Winston Churchill Boulevard and Dundas Street West.
