Today, Mississauga City Council formally received a Facility of Merit award from
Athletic Business Magazine for the Clarkson Community Centre Pool Expansion project. The award
was presented to the City and the project architects, MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller (MJM), at the
Annual Athletic Business Conference in New Orleans in November 2012.
Residents waited a long time to have a community pool, and this building expansion has
exceeded expectations, said Ward 2 Councillor Pat Mullin. I want to thank residents
for their patience, and City staff and architects for the innovative design and programing that
now makes Clarkson Community Centre a complete and vibrant community facility.

of Merit awards were selected by a panel of sports and recreation facility architects during
two days of judging in Chicago. Winners were highlighted in the December issue of the online
The communitys tremendous response to this project has already indicated that the
Clarkson Community Centre pool addition is a winner, added Community Services
Commissioner Paul Mitcham. This is a great example of how getting the community involved
with the right partners and professionals gets results a building that is beautiful as
well as practical and functional.
According to the judges review, the 22,000 square foot building expansion increases
the facilitys presence from the main street and links the facility to the skate park
while also maintaining and improving community access to existing pedestrian and cycling
routes. Strategically placed windows open up the building to the exterior with natural light
and to the interior with views to the pool and library. The new lobby extends the public space
from the street into the heart of the community centre, and abundant seating, landscaping and
bicycle parking encourage informal, spontaneous community interaction.
