PRESTO

PRESTO is a reloadable smartcard which allows customers to pay their fare with the simple tap of a card. You can use your PRESTO card to travel within and between participating transit systems across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and Ottawa.

With PRESTO you can load anywhere from $10 to $1000 on your card. Register your card and your balance is protected if your card is lost or stolen.

PRESTO offers many benefits:

Faster boarding icon  Faster boarding. No need to find the exact cash or the right ticket, and even set up functions to automatically add value or renew passes to ensure you always have funds to travel.
Lowest fares Lowest fares. Transit fare paid on PRESTO is less expensive than the cash fare.
Seamless travel Seamless travel. PRESTO is valid across multiple transit agencies in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and Ottawa and allows transit riders to easily transfer between agencies.
Balance protection

Balance protection on registered cards. If a registered PRESTO card is lost or stolen, it can be replaced and the value restored.

Earn free trips on MiWay for your loyalty

Once you pay for 12 full MiWay fares during any one-week (Monday to Sunday) using your PRESTO card, you can then ride free on MiWay for the remainder of that week!

PRESTO cardholders are automatically enrolled in MiWay's weekly loyalty program.

Note:

  • Fares paid on other transit service providers and discounted GO co-fare payments do not count toward MiWay's PRESTO loyalty program.
  • Transfers do not count as additional paid fares.

Connect with MiWay for 80 cents using PRESTO

Pay only 80 cents to ride MiWay when transferring between MiWay and GO Transit! PRESTO cardholders will automatically receive the co-fare discount when transferring between MiWay and GO Transit within the two-hour transfer window.

With PRESTO, you no longer need a paper transfer as your two-hour transfer period is automatically recognized from the time of your initial tap-on.

Here's how it works:

From MiWay to your destination via GO Transit

  • Tap onto a MiWay bus and a full fare is deducted from your e-Purse.
  • When transferring and tapping on to GO Transit, the GO fare is deducted.
  • When exiting and tapping off of GO Transit, the MiWay fare is reduced by the applicable co-fare discount.

From GO Transit to your destination via MiWay

  • When tapping on to GO Transit, the GO fare to the next zone on the route is deducted from your e-Purse.
  • Upon exiting and tapping off when transferring, the balance of the GO fare is deducted from your e-Purse.
  • Then, when you tap onto a connecting MiWay bus, the discounted co-fare will be deducted from your card's e-Purse.

Note: Remember to tap-off of the GO Bus or at the GO Train Station before you tap-on to MiWay, or the co-fare will not be applied and the full fare will be deducted from your card.

Transfer for free

With PRESTO, you can transfer for free between the following systems within the two-hour transfer window.

  • Brampton Transit
  • MiWay
  • Oakville Transit
  • Burlington Transit
  • York Region Transit/Viva
  • Hamilton Street Railway
  • Durham Region Transit

With a PRESTO card, the transfer expires two hours after you first tap on the bus. The transfer is issued onto the PRESTO card.

Transit agencies other than MiWay's PRESTO Monthly and Weekly Passes are not accepted on MiWay; however a two-hour transfer is applied to your card when you first tap on the bus.

For example, if your card is loaded with a MiWay PRESTO Monthly Pass and you start your trip on MiWay, a two-hour transfer will be applied to your card and you can transfer for free to Brampton Transit. On your return trip, if the two-hour transfer has expired, you will need to have ePurse loaded on your card to travel on Brampton Transit.

You can't use your PRESTO card to pay fares for additional passengers on MiWay at this time.

The steps

 

1. Purchase/load your card

A new card costs $6 plus a minimum load of $10 and can be purchased and loaded:
  • Via the PRESTO website
  • At any GO Train Station in Mississauga
  • At the MiWay Tickets & Passes Booth at Islington Subway Station or the City Centre Transit Terminal
  • At Mississauga Community Centres
  • The Square One GO Bus Terminal (240 Centre View Drive)
  • TTC's new self-serve reload machine at Islington Subway Station

2. Set a concession fare


You can save by setting your card to pay a concession fare at the following locations:
  • At the MiWay Tickets & Passes Booth at Islington Subway Station or the City Centre Transit Terminal
  • At Mississauga Community Centres
  • The Square One GO Bus Terminal (240 Centre View Drive)
  • At any GO Train Station in Mississauga

PRESTO concession fare eligibility is based on age not school grade, except in the Post-Secondary Student fare category, and must be set in person. 

Child, Student and Post-Secondary Student concessions do expire and need to be reset in person, as outlined below.

Please be prepared to show proof of age and/or enrollment when boarding the bus.
Additional Information:

  • Customers are encouraged to check their transactions periodically to ensure the correct concession fare is being deducted (i.e. Balance Checker, Fare Payment Device, PRESTO website, PRESTO Call Centre or at a Customer Service Location).
  • Only MiWay and GO Transit offer a post-secondary PRESTO concession fare.

3. Register your card for added benefits

Recover your balance if your card is lost or stolen

  • If your card is lost or stolen, your balance is protected and can be transferred to a replacement card. 

PRESTO offers one overdraft trip for registered cardholders

  • If you don’t have enough funds on your card, PRESTO will allow you to use one trip to get you to where you need to go.

Set up autoload to automatically reload your card

  • The autoload feature allows you to automatically reload your PRESTO card whenever your balance is low through pre-authorized credit card or debit payments.

Obtain a Transit Usage Report for tax purposes

  • You can claim the cost of any 32 or more one-way trips within a single transit system during an uninterrupted period of 31 days.

4. Tap your card

Have your card loaded and ready for when you board the bus and then simply tap your PRESTO card on the fare payment device at the front of the bus and enjoy your ride.

With PRESTO, you no longer need a paper transfer. PRESTO’s smartcard technology recognizes your continuous travel each time you tap your card, and will allow you a two-hour transfer period from the time of your initial tap-on.

Load Your Card

You can easily load value onto your card online and in person at a Customer Service Outlet or Loading Location. The maximum card balance is $1,000 and minimum load is $10.

Load Your Card With a Monthly Pass

A PRESTO Monthly Pass is valid for unlimited travel on MiWay during a calendar month.

Fares Effective May 1, 2016:
Adult Monthly Pass - $130
Senior Monthly Pass - $61

Monthly passes are available to purchase 14 days prior to the 1st of each month, and 14 days after the 1st of each month. For example, the April monthly pass is available to purchase from March 18th through till April 14th, and will be active from April 1st to April 30th.

Not starting your trip on MiWay? Make sure you have ePurse loaded on your card along with your monthly pass.

Passes are non-refundable.

Autoload

Autoload automatically and instantaneously loads value to your PRESTO card whenever your balance falls below a minimum amount. This guarantees you will always have the funds required to travel.

Autorenew

With Autorenew, you can set up a payment agreement to automatically renew your pass each month. Six days prior to the end of each month, PRESTO charges your account for the value of your pass. When you tap your card as part of a regular trip, your new pass is loaded to your PRESTO to your card.

Requested Reload

Requested Reload stores your credit or debit payment information in your PRESTO account to save you time when loading online or by phone. Requested Reload will not automatically load funds - if you would like your card to reload automatically please set up Autoload.

Requested Reload can only be used on registered cards. Please note it may take at least 24 hours and possibly up to 5 business days to process your payment depending on your financial institution.

What is a PRESTO card?

Answer

 

I have loaded my card with a Brampton Transit weekly/monthly pass; can I use it on MiWay?

Answer

Transit agencies other than MiWay's PRESTO Monthly and Weekly Passes are not accepted on MiWay; However a two-hour transfer is applied to your card when you first tap on the bus.

For example, if your card is loaded with a MiWay PRESTO Monthly Pass and you start your trip on MiWay, a two-hour transfer will be applied to your card and you can transfer for free to Brampton Transit. On your return trip, if the two-hour transfer has expired, you will need to have ePurse loaded on your card to travel on Brampton Transit.

My PRESTO card is defective. What do I do?

Answer

Take your card to a full PRESTO Customer Service Location. If the card has no physical signs of damage on it, a replacement free of charge may be applicable.

If the card is damaged (i.e. bent, stapled through, melted, worn), a new card will need to be purchased.

How is my privacy protected?

Answer

The PRESTO system meets all legislation and applicable guidelines designed to protect your privacy. Your name will not appear on your PRESTO card nor is any personal information stored on it. For more information click here.

 

Can I use my PRESTO card to pay a fare for another person?

Answer

A customer can't use a PRESTO card to pay a fare for another person on a MiWay bus. This functionality will be implemented at a later date.

 

Will my card demagnetize if I store it next to a credit card?

Answer

PRESTO cards cannot be demagnetized because they do not use magnetic stripes.

 

Is it OK if I punch a hole in my card?

Answer

Punching a hole in your PRESTO card will damage the antenna and chip, rendering it useless. If you punch a hole in your card, you will need to purchase a new one for $6.

 

How can I use PRESTO to apply for the Public Transit Tax Credit?

Answer

Eligibility for the Federal Public Transit Tax Credit is determined by the Canada Revenue Agency. For full details, please visit the Tax Credit for Public Transit Passes website.

You can review your Transit Usage Report to determine which trips taken with PRESTO qualify for the Public Transit Tax Credit based on the eligibility requirements.

If you have a registered card, you can download your Transit Usage Report in your online account.
