How to use PRESTO

PRESTO is a reloadable smartcard which allows customers to pay their fare with the simple tap of a card. You can use your PRESTO card to travel within and between participating transit systems across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and Ottawa. With PRESTO you can load anywhere from $10 to $1000 on your card. You can also create a My PRESTO Account to protect your card balance from loss or theft.

The steps

 

1. Purchase/load your card

A new card costs $6 plus a minimum load of $10 and can be purchased:
  • Via the PRESTO website
  • At any GO Train Station in Mississauga
  • At the MiWay Tickets & Passes Booth at Islington Subway Station or the City Centre Transit Terminal
  • At Mississauga Community Centres
  • The Square One GO Bus Terminal (240 Centre View Drive)
  • TTC's new self-serve reload machine at Islington Subway Station

2. Set a fare type

You can save by setting your card to pay a fare type, such as Youth or Senior, at the following locations:

  • At the MiWay Tickets & Passes Booth at Islington Subway Station or the City Centre Transit Terminal
  • At Mississauga Community Centres
  • The Square One GO Bus Terminal (240 Centre View Drive)
  • At any GO Train Station in Mississauga

After setting a fare type, PRESTO cardholders can confirm they are being charged the correct fare by monitoring their transactions. To find MiWay's PRESTO fare types visit, miway.ca/fares

3. Create a My PRESTO Account for added benefits

Recover your balance if your card is lost or stolen

  • If your card is lost or stolen, your balance is protected and can be transferred to a replacement card. 

PRESTO offers one overdraft trip for My PRESTO Account users

  • If you don’t have enough funds on your card, PRESTO will allow you to use one trip to get you to where you need to go.

Set up autoload to automatically reload your card

  • Autoload automatically loads value to your PRESTO card whenever your balance falls below a minimum amount. This guarantees you will always have the funds required to travel.

Set up autorenew to automatically renew your monthly pass

  • If you have a monthly pass, you can set up a the autorenew feature. This allows you to automatically renew your pass each month.

Obtain a Transit Usage Report for tax purposes

  • You can claim the cost of any 32 or more one-way trips within a single transit system during an uninterrupted period of 31 days.

4. Tap your card

Have your card loaded and ready for when you board the bus and then simply tap your PRESTO card on the fare payment device at the front of the bus and enjoy your ride.

With PRESTO, you no longer need a paper transfer. PRESTO’s smartcard technology recognizes your continuous travel each time you tap your card, and will allow you a two-hour transfer period from the time of your initial tap-on.

Add funds or a monthly pass online to save time

To load online, first register your PRESTO card at prestocard.ca

Autoload

Autoload automatically loads value to your PRESTO card whenever your balance falls below a minimum amount.

This guarantees you will always have the funds required to travel.

Autorenew

With Autorenew, you can set up a payment agreement to automatically renew your pass each month.

Six days prior to the end of each month, PRESTO charges your account for the value of your pass.

When you tap your card as part of a regular trip, your new pass is loaded to your PRESTO to your card.

Reload with Saved Payment Method

Reload with Saved Payment Method stores your credit or debit payment information in your PRESTO account to save you time when loading online or by phone. Reload with Saved Payment Method will not automatically load funds - if you would like your card to reload automatically please set up Autoload.

Reload with Saved Payment Method can only be used on with a My PRESTO Account. Please note it may take at least 24 hours and possibly up to 5 business days to process your payment depending on your financial institution.

PRESTO offers many benefits:

Faster boarding icon

Faster boarding. No need to find the exact cash or the right ticket, and even set up functions to automatically add value or renew passes to ensure you always have funds to travel.

Lowest fares Lowest fares. Transit fare paid on PRESTO is less expensive than the cash fare.
Seamless travel Seamless travel. PRESTO is valid across multiple transit agencies in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and Ottawa and allows transit riders to easily transfer between agencies.
Balance protection

Protect your balance with a My PRESTO Account. Once you have created an account if your PRESTO card is lost or stolen, it can be replaced and the funds restored.

PRESTO Loyalty

Earn free trips on MiWay for your loyalty. Once you pay for 12 full MiWay fares during any one-week (Monday to Sunday) using your PRESTO card, you can then ride free on MiWay for the remainder of that week. PRESTO cardholders are automatically enrolled in MiWay's weekly loyalty program.

Presto Pay Less

Pay less with PRESTO when you connect between GO Transit and MiWay. PRESTO cardholders will automatically receive the co-fare discount when transferring between MiWay and GO Transit within the two-hour transfer window. The GO Tansit co-fare to ride MiWay is only 80 cents.

Transfer for free within the two-hour transfer window. The transfer expires two hours after you first tap on the bus. The transfer is issued onto the PRESTO card so you no longer need a paper transfer.

What is a PRESTO card?

 

I have loaded my card with a Brampton Transit weekly/monthly pass; can I use it on MiWay?

Transit agencies other than MiWay's PRESTO Monthly and Weekly Passes are not accepted on MiWay; However a two-hour transfer is applied to your card when you first tap on the bus.

For example, if your card is loaded with a MiWay PRESTO Monthly Pass and you start your trip on MiWay, a two-hour transfer will be applied to your card and you can transfer for free to Brampton Transit. On your return trip, if the two-hour transfer has expired, you will need to have enough funds on your card to travel on Brampton Transit.

My PRESTO card is defective. What do I do?

Take your card to a full PRESTO Customer Service Location. If the card has no physical signs of damage on it, a replacement free of charge may be applicable.

If the card is damaged (i.e. bent, stapled through, melted, worn), a new card will need to be purchased.

How is my privacy protected?

The PRESTO system meets all legislation and applicable guidelines designed to protect your privacy. Your name will not appear on your PRESTO card nor is any personal information stored on it. For more information, click here.

Can I use my PRESTO card to pay a fare for another person?

A customer can't use a PRESTO card to pay a fare for another person on a MiWay bus. This functionality will be implemented at a later date.

Will my card demagnetize if I store it next to a credit card?

PRESTO cards cannot be demagnetized because they do not use magnetic stripes.

Is it OK if I punch a hole in my card?

Punching a hole in your PRESTO card will damage the antenna and chip, rendering it useless. If you punch a hole in your card, you will need to purchase a new one for $6.

How can I use PRESTO to apply for the Public Transit Tax Credit?

Eligibility for the Federal Public Transit Tax Credit is determined by the Canada Revenue Agency. For full details, please visit the Tax Credit for Public Transit Passes website.

You can review your Transit Usage Report to determine which trips taken with PRESTO qualify for the Public Transit Tax Credit based on the eligibility requirements.

If you have a My PRESTO Account, you can download your Transit Usage Report in your online account.
