City of Mississauga Recognized As One of Canada’s Best Employers for New Canadians

For the third year in a row, the City of Mississauga has been selected as one of the nation's best employers for recent immigrants. The 2013 Best Employers for New Canadians special designation recognizes the City for offering programs that assist new Canadians transition to a new workplace and a new life in Canada.

"We are so pleased that the City’s programs and partnerships with community agencies and the corporate sector have once again been recognized in this way," said City Manager and CAO, Janice Baker. "Mississauga is very fortunate to be the location of choice for thousands of immigrants each year,” she said. “We are working to do our part to give new Canadians relevant work experience and the best possible start in their adopted country."

The City was recognized for its commitment and investment in a number of mentoring and internship programs aimed at new Canadians on the Mediacorp Canada Inc. job search engine Eluta.ca. Some of these programs include:

* hiring interns through CareerBridge – an internship program for internationally qualified professionals. Some have gone on to secure full time employment with the City;

* working with partners and programs such as the Mentoring Partnership, Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC) and corporate partners which match experienced professional mentors with internationally educated professionals; and

* implementing policies and programs that support diversity in the workplace and the community such as the City’s Respectful Workplace Policy and Program, Accessible Customer Service Policy and Program, Youth Plan, Older Adult Plan and eLearning employee training related to diversity.

Background:

Based on 2006 census results on Immigration and Citizenship, more than half (51.6 percent) of City of Mississauga citizens where born in another country, which is the highest proportion of immigrants in the nation's 10 largest municipalities.

This competition is a partnership between the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project and ALLIES, a joint initiative of The Maytree Foundation and the J. W. McConnell Family Foundation that promotes successful employment solutions for immigrants and employers across Canada. Selection was based on each organization's willingness to offer programs specifically designed to assist employees who are recent immigrants; recognize foreign educational credentials and experience; assist new employees in getting qualifications formally recognized in Canada; offer internal coaching or mentoring; and training mangers and employees in cross-cultural issues and/or inclusiveness.
