Lakeshore Connecting Communities

City Council endorsed the Lakeshore Connecting Communities Transportation Master Plan which sets out a long-term vision for transit and corridor improvements along Lakeshore Road from 2020 to 2041 that will support waterfront development.

Background

Lakeshore Connecting Communities Master Plan guides the planning and investing in the transportation network in the Lakeshore Corridor, including decisions about optimizing roadways, improving transit, and enhancing cycling and walking connections.

The plan builds on recent planning studies to develop a design for the Lakeshore Road corridor from building face to building face that supports all modes of transportation, connects people to places, and moves goods to market. It also evaluated rapid transit alternatives east of Hurontario Street as well as extending rapid transit into the Port Credit area.

Location

Lakeshore Road between Southdown Road and the east City limit and Royal Windsor Drive between the west City limit and Southdown Road.

Goals and objectives

The City of Mississauga undertook the study to develop a vision for the Lakeshore Road corridor that recognizes the different character areas and to support all modes of transportation, connect people to places and move goods to market, and support existing and future land uses as well as establish an implementation plan to make the vision a reality.

The Lakeshore Connecting Communities Master Plan supports the following City of Mississauga strategic objectives:

  • Vibrant public spaces
  • Transportation and land use integration, multi-modal integration
  • Enhance connections to the waterfront
  • Prosperity for local businesses
  • Preserve the natural environment
  • Improved quality of life
  • Enhance main street features
  • Design for all ages and abilities

Considerations

Lakeshore Connecting Communities is the next step in a series of coordinated planning studies undertaken for the Lakeshore Corridor, including the Clarkson Village Study, Lakeview Review, Port Credit Review, Inspiration Lakeview, Inspiration Port Credit, and the Lakeshore Road Transportation Review.

Input provided through these past and ongoing studies help to shape the vision and ultimate design of the Lakeshore Corridor.

This project was considered in the context of past and ongoing planning work being conducted by Provincial agencies.

Higher order transit was evaluated on Lakeshore Road between Hurontario Street and the east City limit as identified by Metrolinx’s Big Move. GO Transit’s plans for Regional Express Rail (RER) along the Lakeshore West GO Line was also be considered when planning for the future of the corridor.

Existing transit service levels and use were examined to identify opportunities. Different transit alternatives were evaluated to determine the preferred solution to address existing and future needs.

Opportunities to improve the quality of existing active transportation infrastructure were a key focus of this study. We recognize the importance of safe and connected pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Detailed transportation modelling was undertaken as part of this study to ensure that the impacts from any proposed improvements to transit or active transportation on motorists and parking are fully understood and mitigated as much as possible.

Preserving and enhancing the rich social, cultural, and natural environments within the communities of Clarkson, Port Credit, and Lakeview is of paramount importance to this study. Opportunities to fully integrate any proposed improvements into the character of the areas were explored through this study.
