Become a candidate in the upcoming municipal election: Candidate nominations open May 1

Interested in running for Mayor of Mississauga, City/Regional Councillor or School Board Trustee? The candidate nomination period will begin on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. and end on Nomination Day, August 21, 2026, at 2 p.m.

The candidate nomination period opens Friday, May 1, at 8:30 a.m. Candidates may run for Mayor of Mississauga, City/Regional Councillor or School Board Trustee. Anyone interested in running in the upcoming municipal election must book an in-person appointment with an election official to file a nomination. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, August 21 at 2 p.m.

Running as a candidate for Mayor or City/Regional Councillor

To run in the municipal election (Mayor or City/Regional Councillor), you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a resident of the City of Mississauga, or the owner or tenant of property in Mississauga, or the spouse of an owner or tenant of property in Mississauga
  • Not be prohibited under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or any other law

Running as a candidate for School Board Trustee

To run for School Board Trustee, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a resident within the school board’s area
  • Not be prohibited under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or any other law
  • Meet the school board’s voter qualifications (for example, being Roman Catholic or having French language rights)

How to register as a candidate

To become a registered candidate, you must complete all three steps below.

Step 1: Complete the nomination package

Download and fill out all required forms in the nomination package. Paper copies of the package will be available beginning April 24 at 8:30 a.m.

Step 2: File your nomination in person

Book an appointment online to meet with an Election Official and file your completed nomination package with valid identification.

If candidates cannot file their nomination in person, they may appoint an agent to file on their behalf. To appoint an agent, contact the Elections Office at 905-615-3389 or email election.office@mississauga.ca to request the Agent Authorization form.

Step 3: Pay the nomination fee

  • Mayor – $200
  • City/Regional Councillor – $100
  • School Board Trustee – $100

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario offers free workshops for people who are thinking about running for municipal office. Workshops are available for:

  • Underrepresented candidates
  • Youth
  • Indigenous Peoples
  • Current elected officials
  • Community members considering municipal office
