Youth artists to give Hershey Sports Complex a Pan Am makeover

Entertainment and activities | April 8, 2015

The excitement of the TO2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games is going beyond  the sports community as local students prepare to paint the columns at the Hershey Sports Complex in Mississauga this month.

The students will be painting murals from April 14 to 17. On Wednesday, April 15, 2015 members of the community are invited to view the painting in progress, engage with the artists and be part of history.

“This is a great way for young Mississauga artists to celebrate their passion for art through the games,” said Anna Ferguson, City of Mississauga’s Beautification Programmer. “The students will infuse their artistic talents with the Pan Am spirit to create a historic piece of art in the facility.”

The murals, funded by the TO2015 Ignite Program, will be painted by students from John Cabot Catholic Secondary School and Applewood Heights Secondary School. Working with Ferguson, they will create a series of murals that tie together the games with Mississauga people and culture. The designs feature activities that are offered at the Hershey Sports Complex such as fitness, soccer, gymnastics and basketball.

The complex is located next to the Hershey Centre (known during games time as Mississauga Sports Centre [MIS]); it will be the venue for the Pan Am sports of judo, karate, taekwondo, and wrestling and the Parapan Am sports of goal ball, powerlifting and wheelchair rugby.

“The murals will give the venue that special touch and really tell the story of Mississauga’s rich and diverse culture, talent and pride.” said Ferguson. “This is a unique opportunity to witness the making of a Pan Am legacy piece for the city.”
