Your first municipal vote: What to expect on Election Day, October 26

Voting for the first time is an exciting milestone for many people. It’s also an opportunity to help shape decisions that affect daily life in Mississauga. Whether you’ve recently become eligible to vote or are participating in a municipal election for the first time, you may have questions about what to expect. The good news? You’re not alone. In fact, casting your ballot is easier than you might think. 

Getting ready to vote 

Your first voting experience starts before you arrive at a voting location. 

Take some time to learn about the candidates running in your ward and the issues that matter most to you. Maybe you’re interested in transit, parks and recreation, housing or how Mississauga will grow in the years ahead. Whatever your priorities, Election Day is your chance to have your say. 

Before heading out, make sure you know where to vote and have acceptable identification with you. If you received a voter notification card, bring it along. It isn’t required to vote, but it can help make the process quicker and easier. Taking a few minutes ahead of time to prepare can help make the experience smooth and straightforward. 

Arriving at the voting location 

When you arrive, you’ll likely see other residents doing the same thing you are: taking part in local democracy. 

If you’re feeling uncertain, don’t worry. Election staff are there to help you through the entire process and answer any questions you may have. After confirming your information, you’ll receive your ballot and directions on what to do next. 

Many people are surprised by how simple the process is. From check-in to casting a ballot, voting can often take just a few minutes. 

Making your mark 

After you receive your ballot, you’ll head to one of the voting booths to make your selections. 

This is the moment you’ve been preparing for. As you review your choices, you’ll be helping to decide who will represent your community and make decisions that affect residents across the city. 

Once you’ve marked your ballot, you’ll submit it according to the instructions provided at your voting location. Just like that, you’ve cast your first municipal vote.

The City is responsible for many services residents use every day. This includes roads, parks, community centres, libraries and other services residents rely on. Voting is one way that you can help to shape the future of those services for you, your neighbourhood and your city.
