The City of Mississauga has been selected by Sport Alliance Ontario to be the official host of the 2016 Ontario Summer Games, taking place August 11 to 14, 2016.
“I am excited to welcome the best young athletes from across Ontario to our great city,” said Mayor Hazel McCallion. “The Games will not only showcase Mississauga’s love of sport and our world class facilities, they will also put the spotlight on our youth-friendly community.”
“Our successful bid focused on the strong qualities Mississauga brings to the table,” said Paul Mitcham, Commissioner, Community Services. “We highlighted our premiere sport venues, ease of access, expert event management, enthusiastic volunteers and willingness to work with all levels of government and sport governing bodies.”
The City will work with Sport Alliance Ontario to form the Mississauga Games Steering Committee. The Chair of the committee will be Peter Fonseca, a former Ontario Cabinet Minister and Member of Provincial Parliament who also represented Canada in the marathon event in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
“What a wonderful time to be involved in Mississauga’s sport community,” said Fonseca. “Hosting the 2016 Ontario Summer Games will enhance our reputation as a sport-oriented and welcoming city. I am proud to lead the committee that will make these Games a success.”
The City of Mississauga will reach out to the community for volunteer and sponsorship support leading up to the Games.
The Ontario Summer Games are the largest multi-sport event in the province, with over 3,000 young athletes, coaches, managers and major officials participating in over 22-25 different sport events.
Hosting the Games supports the City’s Sport Plan and Sport Tourism strategy. The strategy provides a focused approach and vision for the future of competitive sport events in Mississauga. For more information, please visit mississauga.ca/sportplan.
