Approved: 2017 Culture and Community Grants Program Funding

Mississauga City Council today approved funding for its arts, culture and community grant programs. Funding was approved in the following categories:

  • Arts and Culture Grant Program;
  • Cultural Projects Grant Program;
  • Cultural Festivals & Celebrations Grant Program; and
  • Community Grant Program and Multi-Year Agreements.

“Many of the organizations that sought and received grant funding this year are the heart and soul of our community,” said Paul Mitcham, Commissioner, Community Services. “The City of Mississauga is proud to support the economic, social and city-building impacts these groups and businesses have on our city by investing in such a robust grants program.”

The 2017 Culture and Community Grants Program opened on August 18, 2016 and closed on October 14, 2016

In anticipation of the Canada 150th anniversary events expected to take place throughout Mississauga this year, the City offered a project grant for 2017 that focused specifically on this celebration.

Details of all grant programs and recipients can be found below.

Grant Programs

Grant program: The Arts and Culture Grant Program

Description:

This program provides operating funding for not-for-profit cultural organizations. The grant helps organizations to develop exemplary programs and services that further an understanding and appreciation of the arts, culture and heritage for the citizens of Mississauga.

Grant criteria:

Each eligible grant application was reviewed and scored by the grants Peer Assessment Committee against the published criteria for the program which included the:

  • merit of the service or project provided;
  • impact the service or project has on a local community;
  • capacity of the organization; and
  • the organization’s need for funding.

Funding allocation:

On the recommendation of the Peer Assessment Committee, Council approved $1,702,677 in funding which will be allocated to:

  2. Mississauga Arts Council – $269,670
  3. Heritage Mississauga Foundation – $225,000
  4. Mississauga Symphony Orchestra – $145,000
  5. Visual Arts Mississauga – $145,000
  6. Sampradaya Dance Creations – $130,000
  7. Living Arts Centre in Mississauga – $100,000
  8. Chamber Music Society of Mississauga – $70,000
  9. Mississauga Choral Society – $60,000
  10. Youth Troopers for Global Awareness – $40,790

Grant program: Cultural Festivals & Celebrations Grant Program

Description: This program assists Mississauga-based organizations by providing funding for costs associated with providing a clean and safe venue for the presentation of arts, heritage and cultural festivals and celebrations.

Grant criteria:

Each eligible grant application was reviewed and scored by the grants Peer Assessment Committee against the published criteria for the program which included the:

  • merit of the festival;
  • impact on the local community;
  • capacity of the organization; and
  • the festival’s need for funding.

Funding allocation:

On the recommendation of the Peer Assessment Committee, Council approved $715,000 in funding which will be allocated to:

  2. Mississauga Waterfront Festival – $97,500
  3. Southside Shuffle Blues and BBQ Festival – $90,000

Grant programs: Community Grant Program and Multi-Year Agreements

Description:

In this category, there were four streams of grant funding available.

  1. Multi-year funding agreements(By invitation only) – Agreements with eight key partner agencies, outlined below.
  2. Operating funding– Up to $10,000 – Assists in the cost of general operations and programs delivery for the calendar year in which the grant is awarded.
  3. Project funding– Up to $5,000 – Supports a specific event or activity taking place within a defined period during the calendar year in which the grant is awarded and has a clearly defined objective and a distinct budget
  4. Small project matching grants– Up to $2,500 – Provides support to neighbourhood groups seeking to strengthen neighbourhoods, increase resident engagement, engage volunteers and deliver services/programs at the neighbourhood/community level. 2017 grants will focus on Canada 150 community celebrations. Grant funds will be available starting March 2017.

Funding allocation:

On the recommendation of the Review Committee, Council approved $1,046,733 in funding which will be allocated to the following community groups in the three identified categories.
