Celebrating our Community Builders During Volunteer Appreciation Week

It’s Volunteer Appreciation Week and the City of Mississauga.

City services | April 10, 2019

It’s Volunteer Appreciation Week and the City of Mississauga is thanking residents, organizations and community stakeholders who have taken their time to enrich Mississauga through their voluntary service. Every year, more than 12,000 individuals volunteer their time, talent and experience to support municipal programs and activities.

Volunteers are an important resource in helping to build capacity in programs and deliver important community services. During 2018, volunteers contributed approximately 104,000 hours of voluntary service to support a variety of City-related activities including:

Advisory Committees

Residents participate on various advisory committees where they have the opportunity to advise and make recommendations to Council on designated topics.

Animal Services

Volunteers contribute to dog walking, cat socialization, cat reading and pocket-pet programs. Volunteer foster parents look after pregnant, nursing or orphaned cats and dogs in their homes until they are able to return to the shelter for adoption.

Culture

Volunteers assist staff by supporting exhibits, festivals and events and helping with classes and camps.

Economic Development – Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC)

Experienced business professionals from the community mentor youth and adult entrepreneurs on how to start, build or grow a business.

Library Services

Teens can join Teen Advisory groups or volunteer to be reading or computer buddies. General volunteers help with book sales and deliver Library materials to homebound members.

Parks, Forestry and Environment

Individuals, community and corporate groups contribute to planting trees, park clean-ups, gardening, co-ordinating the Natural Ice Rink Program and delivering community outreach at events.

Recreation

Volunteers assist with swimming and skating lessons, camps, on youth committees or help with program logistics in our older adults programs.

Mississauga volunteers come from all walks of life and represent a broad range of cultures and abilities. They are priceless and the value of volunteerism is immeasurable. Thank you for your contributions; you make our community great!
