City Council Approves Construction of New Community Indoor Pool in Ward 10

City building | October 2, 2015

On Wednesday, Mississauga City Council approved a motion that an indoor pool be added to the phase one community centre building plans for Park 459. The recommendation was put forward at the September 23 Budget Committee meeting.

“For years, I’ve passionately advocated for the need to have a complete community centre in Ward 10 that includes an indoor pool,” said Ward 10 Councillor Sue McFadden. “Swimming is a life skill that all Mississauga residents should have the option to learn. Today’s decision confirms that my ongoing efforts to make a case for the pool were recognized. Taking the time to consult with the community, meet with City staff and gather all the necessary budgetary, financial and population growth considerations solidifies the grounds to approve the motion. This is an investment that benefits the future of our community.”

The pool will primarily service Ward 10 area residents, off-setting the strain of increased demands for aquatic programming at existing community centre pools.

A City staff report received in September by Budget Committee addressed funding requirements to build and maintain the new pool. McFadden added that “a 10-year debenture be issued to fund the capital cost and that the tax levy be increased by 0.5 per cent starting in 2016. Total cost of the pool is approximately $18.7 million.

“There’s been a favourable response from residents asking the City to provide additional aquatic resources,” said Paul Mitcham, Commissioner of Community Services. “Adding a pool to Park 459 will allow the City to develop the land as an all season sports park with programming for all ages.”

The approved 25-metre indoor pool will be constructed as part of phase one of Park 459, a 20.7 hectare park property located on Ninth Line, north of Erin Centre Dr. The new facility will include a community centre with a number of multi-use spaces for recreation, a gymnasium, meeting spaces and outdoor sport fields.

Construction of Park 459 will start in 2017.
