City Helps Businesses Tackle Climate Change Through New Programs

Business and innovation | May 29, 2023

Are you a Mississauga-based business looking to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, save energy, lower costs and increase your company’s environmental sustainability? The City of Mississauga, in partnership with the Mississauga Board of Trade and Partners in Project Green, is launching the Mississauga Climate Leaders Program (MCLP). The program will help local businesses reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance corporate sustainability goals. The program offers specialized supports and training events to help develop, advance and promote climate actions for businesses.

“Whether you’re new to the city, have lived here your whole life or are a business that calls Mississauga home – climate change affects us all. We’ve already begun to see the effects of these changes – changing weather patterns, food supply issues, deteriorating air and water quality, and property damage from intense storms and flooding,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Over the next 25 years, we aim to become a net-zero city. We’re working hard at the municipal level to prevent climate change by transforming our vehicle fleet, making our buildings more energy efficient, using renewable energy, and limiting waste. These actions are not enough on their own. We won’t reach our climate targets without ambitious leadership from within our business community. Together we can achieve our common vision of a prosperous and sustainable community.”

The Mississauga Climate Leaders Program will support businesses in achieving their sustainability goals and position Mississauga as a leader in sustainable business growth,” said Christina Kakaflikas, Director, Economic Development Office.

The MCLP was created to provide local businesses with the support and recognition they need to take meaningful and profitable climate action. The program is focused on supporting pathways for local businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, save energy and lower costs. Program benefits include:

  • Access to specialized training and support programs
  • Action-oriented workshops where businesses can hear from subject matter experts, network with peers and review local business case studies

BACKGROUND

Climate Change Action Plan
The City of Mississauga has been working to tackle climate change through its first comprehensive Climate Change Action Plan. The 10-year plan outlines actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make Mississauga more resilient to climate change, with the ultimate goal of reaching net zero. To help reach its goals, the City has installed electric vehicle chargers, switched some transit to hybrid-electric MiWay buses, and launched Mississauga’s first Urban Agriculture Strategy.
