Mississauga City Council directed staff to move forward on concept planning for the design of a new park and community facilities in the City’s northwest area (Ward 10).
In April 2014, Council directed staff to explore a partnership with the YMCA of Greater Toronto through a Letter of Intent to construct and operate a new recreation facility along Ninth Line in Churchill Meadows. The results of the market assessment confirmed the need for a gymnasium and community meeting spaces but did not support the need for additional aquatic and fitness amenities given the proximity of other facilities nearby. A typical YMCA normally includes these amenities and therefore both parties agreed that a City-owned facility would be the preferred option at this location.
“Council is committed to providing community facilities and a park to serve the growing needs in this area of our city,” said Ward 10 Councillor Sue McFadden. “We’re already exploring a more suitable option for the City to build and operate these indoor and outdoor facilities on this land. I look forward to resident input on how these should be developed.”
The market assessment results are in line with 2014 Future Directions – the City’s master plan for providing Recreation and Park & Forestry programs and services. The master plan identified the need for gymnasium and community meeting and social space as well as outdoor sports fields and open green space in this area of the city. The City has identified Park 459, a 55 acre parcel, as the location for this community facility and park.
In 2015, subject to Council approval of the budget, the City will begin concept design work for the site and will engage the community for input on the building components, park amenities and future programming. Subject to future budget approvals, staff expect detailed design in 2016 and construction to start in 2017 with an opening sometime in 2018.
“We’re moving this forward very quickly so that the City can be ‘shovel ready’ to apply for provincial or federal funding if it becomes available in 2015,” added Councillor McFadden.
Council expressed appreciation to the YMCA as a valued partner and service provider in the community. “We will continue to work together with the YMCA to place future social programs in the area where there is an opportunity for them to provide child care, settlement and youth development for our new and young residents,” said Community Services Commissioner Paul Mitcham.
