Construction season in Mississauga is winding down after another busy year

As Mississauga continues to grow, it is important that the city’s infrastructure is kept in good repair. This year, the City invested approximately $50 million across 16 construction projects to repair, maintain and expand its transportation infrastructure, like roads, sidewalks, bridges and trails, and reduce flooding through stormwater management.

“While construction may cause temporary inconvenience, it plays an essential role in any city’s growth and development. Ongoing construction and maintenance of our infrastructure enables goods, services and people to move safely and efficiently around our city,” said Geoff Wright, Commissioner, Transportation and Works.
“I want to thank Mississauga residents for their patience and co-operation during construction season, as well as the crews and City staff who work hard to complete this critical work with as minimal disruption as possible.”

Construction projects within the City’s Roads and Stormwater Capital Programs include road resurfacing, sidewalk and multi-use trail construction, bridge repairs, creek erosion control work and dredging and maintenance of stormwater management ponds.

“An example of a major construction project would be the Goreway Drive improvement project,” said Sam Rogers, Director, Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Services. “Goreway Drive is a major road connecting Mississauga and Brampton. Drivers have been experiencing major traffic days for decades. In partnership with the City of Brampton and CN Rail, construction has started on the overpass bridge that will improve traffic flow, reduce vehicle emissions as traffic delays are reduced, enhance road safety and improve the quality of life for local residents.”

While construction season may be wrapping up for the year, work takes place on Mississauga’s roads year-round. Residents are reminded to be cautious when travelling near construction sites, adhere to all site signs and barricades and be respectful and give crews space as they work.

2023 road construction projects

Resurfaced seven major roads and 15 residential roads for a total of 14.5 kilometres
Construction of 5.05 kilometres of new sidewalks as part of the road resurfacing program
Rehabilitation of three bridges:
- Burnhamthorpe Road West bridge over Sawmill Valley Trail
- Eglinton Avenue bridge over Little Etobicoke Creek
- Glen Erin Drive bridge over Hunter’s Green Park Trail
Construction of 2.265 kilometres of noise walls
Construction of 3.7 kilometres of multi-use trails and cycle tracks:
- Argentia Road (Tenth Line West to east of Winston Churchill Boulevard)
- Winston Churchill Boulevard (Crosscurrent Drive to Argentia Road and Unity Drive to Highway 403)
- Kennedy Road (Britannia Road East/Coopers Avenue to Matheson Boulevard)
Construction of 3.2 kilometres of cycle tracks and road rehabilitation along Matheson Boulevard East, including the installation of new street lights and signals (ongoing into 2024)
Rehabilitation of The Collegeway (Winston Churchill Boulevard to Mississauga Road), which includes 3.6 kilometres of new cycle tracks, pavement rehabilitation, new traffic signals and street lights and intersection improvements (ongoing into 2024)
Construction of the Rathburn Road and Ponytrail Drive Integrated Road Project, which includes three kilometres of new cycle tracks, pavement rehabilitation, intersection improvements and new pedestrian crossings, noise walls, traffic signals and street lights (ongoing into 2024)

Hazel McCallion Line LRT update

Residents and commuters will have also seen major progress happening on Metrolinx’s Hazel McCallion Line this year. 2023 Stormwater projects

Erosion control projects along two creeks:
- Loyalist Creek (behind Thorn Lodge Drive)
- Cooksville Creek (Canadian Pacific Railway to Kirwin Avenue)
Construction of a Cooksville flood storage facility in McKenzie Park (ongoing into 2024).

Rehabilitation of the Eglinton Avenue bridge over Little Etobicoke Creek

Rehabilitation of the twin bridges on Burnhamthorpe Road West over the Credit River. Work continues into 2024.

Work continues on the Rathburn Road and Ponytrail Drive Integrated Road Project. Work includes pavement rehabilitation, installation of cycle tracks, new traffic signals and street lights, new pedestrian crossings, noise wall installation, storm drainage and intersection improvements. Work continues into 2024.
