Freedom Never Felt so Good: New Pass Offers Free MiWay Rides for City Kids Ages 12 to 14

City services | May 1, 2014

Starting July 1 to August 31, kids ages 12 to 14 can use the new Freedom Pass to take unlimited rides on all MiWay bus routes (excluding route 88 to Wonderland) for free. As a joint initiative between MiWay and the City of Mississauga’s Recreation Division, the pilot program encourages young people to try transit and visit places around Mississauga such as the libraries, community centres and parks.

“The Freedom Pass gets young people to try transit during a key time when they are building independence, transitioning to high school and considering their transportation options,” explains Geoff Marinoff, Director, Transit. “The pass makes it easier for kids to get around and explore the city this summer.”

The Freedom Pass also supports the City’s Youth Plan which creates opportunities to connect kids to community services using public transit.

“There is so much to see and do in Mississauga. With attractions, events and festivals happening throughout the summertime, we wanted to give youth a way to get around the City free of charge,” said Joanne Foote, Community Development co-ordinator with the City’s Recreation Division. “Freedom Pass holders can explore the city from top to bottom and visit places they love like their local community centre, skateboard park, basketball court, Square One or movie nights on Celebration Square to name a few.”

Another major perk of the pass is free swimming at City indoor or outdoor pools.

Passes are available starting May 1 with limited quantities. To apply, drop by any City community centre to complete an application form with parental/guardian approval. Valid photo ID with proof of age is also needed. Customer service staff will take a photo and provide the wallet-sized pass to the child.

Only the photographed Freedom Pass holder is eligible to ride MiWay for free. All other riders must pay regular fares.
