The City of Mississauga is leasing roof space at the Huron Park Recreation Centre and the Burnhamthorpe Community Centre for solar power generation. The installation supports the Provincial Feed-In Tariff (FIT) program to encourage the use of renewable energy technologies in Mississauga.
The installation also supports the City’s strategic direction and environmental vision to promote the utilization of technologies to:
“We know we can’t do it alone. We know that as a City one of the best ways to move forward with environmental sustainability is to partner with others who have the experience and expertise,” said Ward 8 Councillor Matt Mahoney and Environmental Advisory Committee Chair. “In this instance, we are leasing roof space to Solar Provider Group from Toronto which through this installation will generate enough electricity to offset 24 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.”
“We are making smarter choices by considering alternative forms of energy like solar power,” said Gary Kent, Commissioner of Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer. “Staff is always looking for synergies between other levels of government, conservation authorities, the private sector, non-profit organizations and the community. These synergies enable us to deliver on the Council approved action items identified through long-range master plans and the business plan and budget process.”
The solar panel installation will be completed in early September.
