Local Aerospace Giant Expands Facility in Mississauga

Business and innovation | October 16, 2018

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Canada Aerospace (MHICA), a subsidiary of Japan-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, announced that its Mississauga-based facility will be undergoing a 206,000 square-foot expansion that will be completed in November 2019.

“We are absolutely thrilled that MHICA has chosen to once again expand in Mississauga, home of Canada’s largest aerospace cluster. MHICA continues to be a vital part of our aerospace community, and we’re grateful that they continue to feel at home in Mississauga,” said Mayor of Mississauga Bonnie Crombie. “Since opening their first facility in Mississauga over ten years ago, MHICA has seen steady growth, expansion and development which has had a significant positive economic impact on our city. This significant investment reinforces MHICA’s commitment to our city and will help create good highly-skilled jobs and boost our local economy. Mississauga is open for business!” added Mayor Bonnie Crombie.

“Mississauga’s aerospace manufacturing sub-sector is the largest across all major Canadian centres by total employment and number of businesses,” said Bonnie Brown, Director, Economic Development. “We know that aerospace is an important part of our city’s future and its growing economy.”

Recently, the City of Mississauga was recognized for its work in the aerospace industry by fDi Magazine, a publication for the business of globalization. Mississauga ranked second in fDi’s Aerospace Cities of the Future 2018/19 Report for innovation, attractiveness and strategy in the aerospace sector. The Report also cited Mississauga as having the most aerospace businesses and employment in all of Canada.

“MHICA’s growth over the past 12 years has been consistently supported by the City of Mississauga,” said Mike McCarthy, CEO, MHICA. “The City played a key role in helping us establish our first facility in Meadowvale in 2007. Then again in 2012, the City worked with us to help create our existing 270,000 square foot Mississauga plant on Northwest Drive. Our latest expansion is the result of our continued reliance upon Mississauga’s strong business culture, and its educated and energetic talent, to bring us the employees that we need. MHICA is proud to help lead the growth and strength of the aerospace industry in Mississauga.”
