Mayor Crombie and Members of Council Raise Mississauga’s Priorities at the 2021 AMO Virtual Conference

Mayor Bonnie Crombie and Councillors Karen Ras (Ward 2) and Chris Fonseca (Ward 3), attended the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s (AMO) 2021 virtual conference this week where they met with government officials, including cabinet ministers, MPPs and industry stakeholders. The Mississauga delegation discussed the issues facing the City and the priorities of Mississauga, including, promoting housing affordability, investing in sustainable infrastructure, leading recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, revisions to the GTAA PILT formula, and building new transit and transportation networks, among many more.

“The AMO Conference is our opportunity to discuss issues with the provincial government and work together to find solutions. It is also our opportunity to inform the government of Mississauga’s priorities and ensure they understand why Mississauga matters,” said Mayor Crombie. “There are many issues and challenges on the horizon for our City and we need the support of our provincial partners to bring our plans to reality.”

In addition to the conference program, Mayor Crombie, Councillors Ras and Fonseca, and CAO and City Manager, Paul Mitcham met with Cabinet Ministers in charge of the following portfolios:

  • Attorney General
  • Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade
  • Finance
  • Transportation
  • Infrastructure
  • Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture
  • Municipal Affairs and Housing
  • Small Business and Red Tape Reduction
  • Colleges and Universities
  • Ministry of the Attorney General

As well, the Mississauga delegation met with the Leaders of the Official Opposition, Andrea Horwath and the Ontario Liberal Party, Steven Del Duca.

Mayor Crombie also serves as the Vice Chair of the Ontario Big City Mayor’s Caucus (OBCM). As part of the conference, Mayor Crombie joined fellow mayors in meetings with the Minister of Health, Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, and the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

AMO is a non-profit organization representing almost all of Ontario’s 444 municipal governments. AMO supports and enhances strong and effective municipal government in Ontario and promotes the value of municipal government as a vital and essential component of Ontario and Canada’s political systems. Each year Mississauga leads a delegation to the conference and arranges meetings with key ministries and Members of Cabinet to discuss the City’s top priorities.

For more than a century, Ontario’s largest municipal conference has brought together municipal, provincial and federal officials to work collectively to overcome municipal challenges and plan for the future.
