Meadowvale Community Centre and Library Receives Award of Merit for Barrier-Free Design

The City of Mississauga has won the 2016 March of Dimes Canada Award of Merit for Barrier-Free Design for the newly renovated Meadowvale Community Centre and Library.

The award is presented for buildings or facilities that are designed or renovated with a focus on accessibility. It also recognizes accessibility design excellence and highlights the importance of barrier-free design.

Officially reopened to the public last month, Meadowvale Community Centre and Library underwent a two-year renovation process to make it entirely accessible. Some of the many accessible features include:

• a therapeutic pool
• 25 metre lap pool with ramp access
• universal washrooms
• automatic doors
• tactile panels

“Improving accessibility in our facilities and going above and beyond basic building code requirements is just one way we continue to realize the City’s Accessibility Vision and remove barriers for everyone,” said Gary Kent, Commissioner of Corporate Services. “Congratulations to all staff who worked so hard on completing this project.”

The City previously won the award in 2011 for the Malton Community Centre Pool.

Background

The original Meadowvale Community Centre was built in 1973 and included a pool, fitness centre with racquetball and squash courts, meeting rooms (including a large auditorium) and lobby space. It is one of the City’s facilities with the highest attendance in aquatic programs, memberships, drop-in swim programs and rentals.
