Mississauga advances top priorities with provincial government at 2025 AMO conference

From August 17 to 20, Mississauga Councillors and staff attended the 2025 Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference in Ottawa. Over the four days, the Mississauga delegation attended meetings with government officials including cabinet ministers, opposition party leaders, Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs), and industry stakeholders to discuss and advocate for Mississauga’s priorities.

Attendees from Council included: Deputy Mayor and Ward 8 Councillor Matt Mahoney, Ward 2 Councillor Alvin Tedjo, Ward 3 Councillor Chris Fonseca, Ward 5 Councillor Natalie Hart, Ward 6 Councillor Joe Horneck, and Ward 11 Councillor Brad Butt. Senior City staff including City Manager and CAO Geoff Wright also attended in support.

At the conference, Mississauga’s delegation advocated for support for the City’s top priorities, including:

1. Fixing the Peel Regional Police funding formula at the Region of Peel to ensure fairness for Mississauga taxpayers by saving more than $93 million in annual subsidies to Brampton.
2. Advocating for a new financial deal for Mississauga, similar to those signed with Toronto and Ottawa, to fund transit operating costs and capital projects.
3. Providing financial help to Mississauga to support the waiving of Development Charges and other incentives to get more housing that is affordable built quicker.
4. Advancing priority transit projects, including the Hazel McCallion Line LRT Downtown Loop and all-day, two-way GO service on the Milton corridor.
5. Pushing more infrastructure funding to combat flooding and manage stormwater in areas of the city hardest hit by recent floods.
6. Working with the province to respond to American tariffs and protect local jobs and the economy.
7. Adding more justices of the peace for the City’s Provincial Offences Act courts to ensure justice is done in a timely manner.
8. Fixing the Greater Toronto Airport Authority Payment in Lieu of Taxes formula that shortchanges Mississauga by millions of dollars per year.

Individual meetings were held with cabinet ministers and representatives from:

1. The Solicitor General
2. The Attorney General
3. Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade
4. Ministry of Infrastructure
5. Ministry of Transportation
6. Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks
7. Ministry of Finance
8. Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing

The Mississauga delegation also met with the leaders and caucus members from the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP), Ontario Liberal Party and the Ontario Green Party.
