Mississauga City Council Declares Ward 4 Vacancy

Local government | December 17, 2014

Today, Mississauga City Council declared the Ward 4 Councillor seat vacant. This was a result of the election of Ward 4 Councillor Frank Dale as Peel Regional Chair on December 4, 2014.

Council has the option of calling a by-election for Ward 4 or appointing a new Councillor. The decision to either pass the by-law requiring a by-election or making an appointment must be made within 60 days of declaring the seat vacant.

There will be a special meeting of Council on January 5, 2015 to consider both options. Council has asked staff to prepare a report outlining the details for a municipal by-election, if required. The staff report will include key dates and budget requirements for holding the by-election. A by-law to call a by-election may be passed at that meeting.

Mayor Bonnie Crombie, with support from Council, will ensure Ward 4 residents continue to be represented.

Background
Council declared the office of Ward 4 Councillor vacant as required by the Municipal Act, 2001, Section 262 (1) effective December 4, 2014.

A by-law to fulfill the requirements of the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O. 2001, c. 25 may be passed at the January 5, 2015 meeting.
