Mississauga City Manager Elected President of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators

Mississauga City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Janice Baker, has been elected President of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA).

“As an active member of CAMA for the past several years, I am proud to take on this new role,” said Baker. “As President, I look forward to leading this group and the work we do to champion a culture of continuous learning and advance excellence in municipal administration.”

Baker was named President at CAMA’s annual general meeting on May 30 in Gatineau, Quebec. She will lead the 575-member organization of senior Canadian municipal administrators for the next year. She most recently served as First Vice-President for the association and is the CAMA Representative for Ontario.

Janice has repeatedly demonstrated a commitment to share best practices for the improved delivery of local government programs and services with other municipal professionals to use in their cities and towns,” Mayor Crombie added. “With this latest accomplishment, Janice has once again raised the profile of Mississauga for the better. Janice has rightly earned this important position!”

Baker has more than 30 years of municipal government experience. She joined the City of Mississauga in May 1999 as Commissioner of Corporate Services and Treasurer. She became City Manager and CAO in January 2005. She has also served as Director of Finance and City Treasurer for the City of St. John’s in Newfoundland and was Commissioner of Corporate Services and then Commissioner of Public Works for the City of Oshawa, Ontario.

Baker has received a number of awards, including: three-time Women’s Executive Network (WXN) Top 100 Award winner in the Public Sector Leaders category; induction into the WXN Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women’s Hall of Fame; Fellowed Chartered Accountants (FCA) designation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO), and Excellence in Municipal Finance Award from the Municipal Finance Officers Association of Ontario (MFOA).

In addition to CAMA, Baker also serves on several Boards and Committees including Living Arts Centre (LAC), Healthy Cities Stewardship Centre and Association of Municipalities Ontario (AMO).

CAMA is a national, non-profit association open to all Chief Administrative Officers / City Managers and any person employed in a senior management position that reports directly to a CAO.  With a membership of approximately 575 senior municipal employees, from all parts of Canada, CAMA collectively represents more than 70 per cent of the nation’s population.
