Today, Council adopted the City’s new five-year Life Sciences Cluster Strategy. The strategy identifies priorities to support the growth and development of the life sciences sector and is the first of its kind for a Canadian municipality.
“This strategy will guide the Economic Development Office’s ongoing efforts to identify new opportunities to strengthen Mississauga’s competitive advantage in the life sciences industry,” said Mayor Crombie. “This strategy is the spark that will ignite the synergy between government, industry, academia and concerned citizens. Together, we will create a sustainable environment that supports and nurtures scientific breakthroughs and medical innovations that will benefit the world while generating important economic development here at home.”
“The strategy represents a series of actions that will shape the future outcomes and success of Mississauga’s life sciences cluster and ultimately position Mississauga as a global business leader,” said Susan Amring, Director, Economic Development. “Currently, Mississauga’s life sciences sector is now ranked as the second largest by employment in Canada with 430 companies employing over 22,000 employees. It is more diverse than ever, contributing to new technologies and innovations that benefit healthcare and wellness globally. We know that to be truly successful, we need the continuous commitment and interaction between industry, government and cluster stakeholders.”

“The extensive engagement with our cluster stakeholders was critical in developing our strategy. It represents our collective vision and aspirations for Mississauga’s life sciences cluster,” said Bonnie Brown, Manager of Sector Development and Economic Partnerships. “Having an official strategy in place gives local cluster stakeholders the opportunity to align their priorities and activities; which in turn, will help us be successful in achieving our strategic vision. “In addition, Mississauga’s Economic Development Office has a Life Sciences Consultant whose role is dedicated to the successful implementation of the strategy.”
