Mississauga Once Again Named Top Mid-Sized City of the Future

The City of Mississauga has received five awards from Foreign Direct Investment (fDi) Magazine, including being the overall winner for mid-sized City of the Future 2019/2021 in all of the Americas for strong economic performance. According to fDi Magazine’s report, Mississauga has gained a reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing recording the highest number of companies in the mid-sized city category.

“It’s clear – Mississauga is a city in demand. It’s an honour to receive this recognition from fDi two years in a row. It signals to the world that Mississauga is not only at the centre of Canada’s advanced manufacturing universe but we are stepping up on the world stage as an innovative city where businesses want to invest, grow and succeed,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “I’d like to thank our City’s dedicated economic development team for their work to promote Mississauga’s unlimited potential across the country and around the world. Mississauga’s future is as bright as it is limitless.”

In addition to being selected as mid-sized City of the Future, Mississauga received recognition in the following categories:

  • First in Business Friendliness
  • Third in Connectivity
  • Fourth in Economic Potential and;
  • 10th for Overall fDi Strategy

“Our businesses choose Mississauga because we’re innovative and provide a comfortable environment for them to grow and flourish,” said Bonnie Brown, Director of Economic Development. “Over the last five years, we have seen growth across all our sectors and receiving these accomplishments is an indication that we’re on the right track. As we look ahead, we will continue to make Mississauga a global hub for innovation.”

Mississauga’s vibrant business community is made up of over 91,000 businesses, 1400 multi-national firms and 75 Fortune 500 companies. Mississauga is one of the largest business centres in Canada, and a net importer of employment, with over 230,000 people coming into Mississauga for work each day.

fDi Cities of the Future shortlists are created using specialist online tools across 421 cities throughout North and South America. Cities are scored up to a maximum of 10 points under each individual criteria which are weighted by importance to give the overall scores. The ranking system is focused on a mixture of data and expert opinions to rank cities that have the best prospects for inward investment, economic development and business expansion.
