Mississauga Participates in the Safe Restart Funding Program with Thanks

Today, Mississauga City Council approved the City’s participation in the Safe Restart Funding Program.

As part of wider funding announcements made recently by federal and provincial governments, Council was also updated on the status of eligibility for funding for Transit Phase 3 and the Municipal stream of the Safe Restart Funding Program. Council was also updated on the recently announced capital Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) funding  which resulted from a 2019 application.

“I extend my sincerest thanks to both the provincial and federal governments for the funding we have received under ICIP, the Safe Restart Agreement and the new 2021 COVID-19 Recovery Funding for Municipalities Program,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “This funding goes a long way in allowing us to continue to provide services in our City that many Mississauga residents depend on.”

“We greatly appreciate funding that helps us with recovery and continuing our work,” said Paul Mitcham, City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer. “We know there is another hard year ahead and services such as transit will not see a return to normal for some time. In some instances, provincial and federal transit funding will not be sufficient to cover all municipal operating impacts due to COVID-19 and we will be working to bridge that gap.”

“We are  continuing to manage the deficit arising from the pandemic while providing services and programs. This funding will assist with  the 2021 projected deficit caused by the reduction in transit ridership, recreation programming and other COVID-19 related matters,” said Gary Kent, Commissioner, Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer. “We will continue to find efficiencies in operating services and make decisions to minimize the impact on the taxpayer through the options we have including using existing reserves and reserve funds. Staff will continue to monitor the City’s financial position and provide updates to Council members through future reports on a timely basis.”

Under the terms of the various agreements, none of these funds can be used to reduce taxes, only to reimburse the City for deficits incurred or to fund infrastructure projects.
