Mississauga Recognizes National Forest Week with Events and Tree Giveaways

City staff will host a series of events for residents, including tree-plantings, educational webinars and tree giveaways to celebrate National Forest Week on September 19 to 25, 2021. Events will raise awareness about the importance of forests and trees in urban spaces while formally kicking off the fall planting season and advancing the goals of the Climate Change Action Plan.

This year, the City was the recipient of the TD Green Spaces Grant for $25,000 from TD Bank Group (TD) and the Arbor Day Foundation for supporting green infrastructure development. The City also received the CN EcoConnexions From the Ground Up Grant from the CN for $25,000 for the greening of municipal properties across Canada. This support has made these National Forest Week events possible.

COVID-19 restrictions are in place including limited attendance, masking, physical distancing and contact tracing. Pre-registration is required to participate and all participants will be required to complete a pre-screening. Please follow all COVID-19 protocols in place.

Flagship tree-planting event

What:
A tree-planting event with 75 volunteers planting 400 trees. A tour of the nearby woodland will also be offered and led by City staff. This event is made possible by the CN EcoConnexions From the Ground Up Grant.

Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) tree-planting event

What:
A tree-planting event hosted by the TRCA. This event is made possible by the TD Green Spaces Grant from TD Bank Group (TD) and the Arbor Day Foundation.

Background

Mississauga is home to 2.1 million trees on both public and private lands – an urban forest that covers 19 per cent of the city.

In 2020, Mississauga joined other Tree Cities of the World and was recognized for its commitment to protect, enhance and celebrate its urban tree canopy. With the support of volunteers, more than 40,000 trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses are planted annually throughout the city.

The City is well over one-third of the way towards its goal to plant one million new trees by 2032 through its One Million Trees program.
