Mississauga taps into provincial funding to expand investments into road safety measures

The City of Mississauga welcomes funding from the province to enhance road safety measures in school and community safety zones across the city.

Mississauga remains committed to road safety and while the use of the automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras ended last year, the City is investing in new measures and initiatives to maintain safety on its roads. These investments are made possible through the Road Safety Initiatives Fund (RSIF). This provincial funding provided Mississauga with an initial $2,242,888 for road safety enhancement in school zones and community safety zones identified as most in need of safety improvements. An additional $8,934,513 is also available for road safety enhancements in school zones and community safety zones across the city, reimbursed after costs are incurred.

As a Vision Zero city working towards a goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries from collisions on city roads, Mississauga continues to prioritize investments that protect vulnerable road users, reduce risk in high-traffic areas and help create safer streets for everyone who lives, works and travels in the city.

How the funds will be spent

RSIF is only eligible to be used in school zones and community safety zones where ASE cameras were installed or were planned to be used. In Mississauga, all school zones are designated as Community Safety Zones, ensuring they were ASE eligible. This means, all school zones within the city are eligible for safety improvements through the RSIF.

The initial interim funding is being used to install physical traffic calming at locations identified as most in need of safety improvements. The second round of funding will be dedicated to standard improvements across all school zones. It will include warning signs, flashing beacons, speed display signs, and pavement marking applications. All initiatives funded under the RSIF have to be completed by March 31, 2028.

A standard installation of signs and pavement applications will help enhance the safety in school zones across the city, making full use of the additional RSIF.

Other road safety investments

In addition to the new projects that will be implemented as a result of RSIF, the City’s existing road safety programs help reduce speeding and promote safety. They include:

  • Designating 31 school zones on major roadways as Community Safety Zones in 2025, bringing the total to more than 200 Community Safety Zones designated in Mississauga as of September 2025. These are designated sections of the roads where public safety is of special concern. Many set fines are doubled in these zones, such as speeding and traffic-signal related offences.
  • In 2025, new traffic calming projects were installed on 24 roads in residential neighbourhoods and near school zones to help reduce speeding and aggressive driving.
  • Installing more pedestrian crossovers to provide protected pedestrian crossings. In 2025, 13 new pedestrian crossovers were installed to help increase safety for pedestrians crossing the road.
  • Continuing the School Walking Routes program to guide the way to school and alert drivers to watch for children.
