Mississauga’s Creative Community Benefits from City’s Pilot Program

City of Mississauga provides creatives with access to free cultural space

Entertainment and activities | February 13, 2020

In response to the needs of the arts community for more accessible, creative spaces, the City of Mississauga has introduced a pilot program with creatives in mind.

The City’s Culture Division introduced the program in January 2020 and offers the creative community the opportunity to take advantage of free cultural space at the recently renovated Small Arms Inspection Building (SAIB), located at 1352 Lakeshore Road East.

With 18,000 sq. ft. of open space, there is plenty of room to accommodate individual artists and creative groups simultaneously. The space is available during public hours to all of Mississauga’s arts community.

“Access to space is important for the development of arts and cultural projects,” said Lisa Abbott, Manager, SAIB & Museums of Mississauga. “The City is proud to offer space for artists to gather, connect, collaborate and share with others. It’s important to acknowledge the unique heritage of the SAIB and its newfound ability to foster the incubation of ideas and advancement of creative practices in Mississauga.”

Creatives can take advantage of this free cultural space on a first-come, first-served basis year-round Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Common uses include meeting space, space for photo documentation, work space, visual art practices, meet ups, workshops and rehearsals. The venue has free onsite parking and Wi-Fi for visitors and is accessible by the MiWay Lakeshore #23 bus. Visit MiWay’s Trip Planner to plan your travel and get real time trip updates on your next bus arrival.

The Small Arms Inspection Building is available for exclusive rental in the evenings after 6 p.m. (Tuesday – Friday) Saturdays after 2 p.m. and all day Sunday and Monday for $49 per hour plus a permit fee. The permit fee for arts and culture activities is $250. Visit smallarmsinspectionbuilding.ca for more information on SAIB programs and services.
