MiWay Celebrates 70 per cent Growth Since Mississauga Transitway Opening in 2014

Since the Mississauga Transitway opened two years ago, weekday ridership has grown by 70 per cent.

“We are on track to reach our goal of five million boardings on the transitway by the time the entire 12 station dedicated transitway is complete in 2017,” said Geoff Wright, Commissioner, Transportation and Works.

Service levels and passenger travel on the east-west transitway has increased, since the original four stations, Central Parkway, Cawthra, Tomken and Dixie, opened in November 2014. Three additional stations are now open including Erin Mills in the west and Tahoe and Etobicoke Creek in the east.

“There has been steady growth on MiExpress routes 107, 109 and MiLocal 21,” reports Patrick Phaneuf, acting Director of Transit. “Daily weekday ridership has increased from 8,000 on opening day in 2014 to 13,600 riders in October 2016 – a 70 per cent increase in riders travelling on the Transitway.”

Phaneuf added that at the same time, Saturday service was added in 2015 and grew from 2,900 to 4,000 this year – a 41 per cent increase.

More Stations and Service to Come

Winston Churchill, the final station in the west, is set to open at the end of the year. Both GO Transit and MiWay will service this new station along with the Erin Mills station that opened in 2015. MiWay also has new Sunday service planned for these stations. Full schedule information will be available soon.

Spectrum, Orbitor and the Renforth Gateway (the final station in the east) will open in 2017. This will complete the 18 kilometre, dedicated bus corridor, making travel connections to Toronto Pearson International Airport and the Bloor-Danforth subway line easier via Highway 427.

“When all 12 stations are open in 2017, MiWay will increase express service, routes and frequency of buses,” said Phaneuf. “The entire dedicated transitway will make travel more efficient across the city.  Passengers travelling from Winston Churchill Station to Renforth station will save 15 to 18 minutes.”
