Music to Your Ears: Mississauga Libraries Offer Free Weekly Music Downloads

Entertainment and activities | July 24, 2014

The Mississauga Library has a surprise in store for cardholders who are music lovers. Starting this week, libraries around the city will be launching Freegal, an internet-based music service. Freegal gives cardholders access to search, stream and download music for free.

“By providing a service like Freegal, we are keeping pace with digital trends and expanding our digital resource collection,” said Rose Vespa, Director, Library. “Freegal offers cardholders access to digital music on their smartphones, tablets, MP3 players and computers – its music everyone can enjoy whenever and wherever they want.”

Cardholders can download three MP3 files a week for free and can keep them as long as they like. Freegal’s music catalogue gives users access to millions of songs from more than 80 countries around the world. It includes newly released music from all genres including hip hop, rock, contemporary, classical, jazz, Latin and country. Users can browse for their favourite songs by title, artist or album.

According to Vespa, cardholders need to download the Freegal app on their smartphone, tablet or visit the Library’s website and click on the link to the Freegal website. They sign in using their library card number and then can seamlessly stream or download music files and transfer them to any digital music device.

In addition to downloading music, users can also stream three hours of music from Freegal with no limit to the number of cardholders using the service. They can stream individual songs, albums, create and save playlists or use existing playlists.

The library will also continue to offer their physical music collection. “For those who prefer CD’s, we will still have our collection for checkout,” said Vespa.
