New City committee looks to build partnerships with cultural organizations

Local government | March 6, 2015

Today the City of Mississauga launched its new Economic Development Office and Advisory Board subcommittee called the Mississauga International Partnership Program committee (MIPP). The committee focuses on fostering new and existing connections with cultural groups to help attract foreign direct investment and improve the City’s international competitiveness.

“The new Mississauga International Partnership Program committee will leverage Mississauga’s international expertise, cultural diversity and networks to help our local economy reach its full potential. Growing Mississauga’s connections to global markets will lead to local business opportunities, in this increasingly interconnected global economy,” Mayor Bonnie Crombie said. “The committee will further identify strategies and set goals to elevate Mississauga’s globally renowned reputation as a leading destination for entrepreneurs and established businesses to invest; develop and test new marketable concepts; expand service offerings; create local jobs; and achieve unrivalled success,” Mayor Crombie added.

City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Janice Baker said committee members will provide advice and input to the Mississauga Economic Development Office on matters related to international investment.

“One of the areas we are looking for the committee to advise on is identifying emerging economic conditions, trends and new markets that will assist the City in responding to the demands of our globally competitive knowledge-based economy,” said Baker. “We want to ensure we look at partnerships that are beneficial to Mississauga’s future – initiatives that retain, expand and attract international investment.”

Mayor Crombie will be the honorary chairperson of the 15-member committee, which will largely consist of multicultural representatives from either business, culture or other non-profit international business promotion organizations in Mississauga.

The City’s Economic Development Office will assume the responsibility of filling the committee seats based on specific criteria. The Mayor will appoint local business, trade organizations and Mississauga’s cultural association representatives.
