Ready for Patio Season – Temporary Patio Program Update

Business and innovation | March 24, 2021

Mississauga restaurants and bars with a valid 2021 business licence can temporarily expand outdoor seating and dining areas provided they comply with City requirements and meet COVID-19 safety regulations and guidelines for patrons and staff.

Mississauga, as part of the Region of Peel, is in the Grey-Lockdown Zone of the Government of Ontario’s COVID-19 Response Framework that was adjusted to allow outdoor dining, effective Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 12:01 a.m.

The City of Mississauga introduced a Temporary Use Zoning By-law last summer, to allow patios in Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) and other areas where restaurants have direct street frontage and at restaurants located at malls that have their own access, municipal right-of-ways, municipal parking lots or in parking areas on private properties. For public safety, temporary patios will not be considered on municipal road right-of-ways with posted speed limits over 50 km/h.

“We know that our restaurants have been significantly impacted by COVID-19 and we are doing everything we can to support local businesses and get restaurants back in business as soon as possible,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “It’s so important that as we begin to reopen, that everyone takes the proper precautions to keep themselves, their loved ones and everyone in the community safe.”

Temporary Patios on Public Lands

Temporary patios proposed on the City’s municipal road right-of-way or a municipal parking lot, will require a Temporary Patio Permit. Restaurants can apply online. A dedicated staff team is in place to review applications as soon as they are received.

Temporary Patios on Private Lands

For temporary patios on private lands, patios must adhere to design requirements and comply with applicable zoning regulations. Restaurants should seek the permission of the owner or property manager prior to installation. Permit Information.

All local businesses must adhere to guidelines from the Province of Ontario and the Region of Peel. New resources are available to support businesses reopen and recover at mississauga.ca/business-covid-19.
