Ready, Set, Row! Mississauga Hosts the 2023 World Rowing Indoor Championships

Entertainment and activities | February 17, 2023

Mississauga is proud to be the first Canadian city to host the 2023 World Rowing Indoor Championships from February 25 to 26 at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre. The two-day event will welcome more than 2,000 athletes from more than 40 countries. Athletes, who include Canadian Olympic gold medallists and Paralympians, will compete in a two-day competition, which includes several race categories like 2,000-metre and 500-metre races.

“Congratulations to the local and international athletes competing in the 2023 World Rowing Indoor Championships. Mississauga is proud to be the first Canadian city to host this competition, and it feels incredible to welcome visitors and athletes back to our city after the pandemic,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Thank you for choosing our community to represent the highest level of your sport. We are excited to share our dynamic city and world-class sporting facilities with you as you showcase your talent, hard work and dedication as you go for gold.”

Indoor rowing, otherwise known as Ergometer rowing, has been widely used in training and preparation of athletes for many years. More recently, indoor rowing has grown into a serious sport of its own with hundreds of races now held around the world each year.

“As a sport-oriented city, welcoming to all – our focus remains on pursing bids to bring more sporting events, like 2023 World Rowing Indoor Championships to Mississauga, from a local, regional, national and international perspective,” said Jodi Robillos, Commissioner, Community Services, City of Mississauga. “Hosting these types of sporting events gives us a unique opportunity to showcase the importance of sports in our community and how it unites us all. We’ve invested a lot in our recreational programs and sporting facilities to ensure that residents have the opportunity to stay active and healthy, and that athletes also feel welcome when visiting our city.”

In June 2020, the World Rowing Federation (FISA – from the French, Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron), announced that the City of Mississauga would host the World Rowing Indoor Championships in 2023. Mississauga was among other national cities to compete for the bid to host the Championship including, Lima, Peru; Beijing, China; Cairo, Egypt; Hamburg, Germany; Prague, Czech Republic and London, England.

“Whether it’s the athletes or their fans, Mississauga is equipped to provide everyone at the World Rowing Indoor Championships with access to an excellent transportation system, great amenities and a variety of restaurants and activities to help them make the most of their weekend,” said Victoria Clarke, CEO, Tourism Mississauga.

The Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships have been held annually in Mississauga since 2009 (with the exception of two years when the competition was held virtually).
