The recent imposition of a 25 per cent tariff by the United States on Canadian imports has raised concerns among Mississauga businesses and residents.

I understand the anxiety many of you are feeling with the recent U.S. tariffs coming into effect, and I share that sentiment.
The recent imposition of a 25 per cent tariff by the United States on Canadian imports has raised concerns among Mississauga businesses and residents, and reasonably so. Although the road ahead will be faced with challenges for our country and community, I want to assure you that we will face them together.
Both our federal and provincial governments are taking strong measures to protect our economy. The federal government’s retaliatory tariffs and Ontario’s swift decision to ban American companies from provincial contracts will help mitigate the impact on our local businesses. These measure sends a clear message that our economy, and our country will not be undermined.
It is disheartening to see a long-standing friendship and partnership between Canada and the United States, one that has been mutually beneficial for decades, strained by recent policy shifts in the U.S.
However, Mississauga has always been a resilient community, and together we can use this moment to support our local economy by consciously choosing Canadian-made products. While this situation may seem beyond your control, each of us has the power to make an impact. When we come together and make deliberate, conscious choices, we can collectively create change and make a difference.
The next time you are going down the grocery aisle, try to look for a “Made in Canada” sign on your grocery items and everyday purchases.
Mississauga is proudly the second-largest economy in Ontario, and home to innovative Canadian businesses, as well as American companies that have chosen to operate here. We value their contributions and hope they will continue to be part of our city’s success story.
We will work closely with our local businesses and ensure that everyone has the available resources and support they need to navigate this uncertain period.
I urge you once again to make conscious choices in supporting Canadian businesses, particularly within our own community of Mississauga. We can turn this challenge into an opportunity for growth. Let’s showcase the quality, innovation, and excellence that our Canadian products offer.
Together, we will emerge stronger than before.
