Mississauga Celebrates Tourism Week 2022

Entertainment and activities | May 27, 2022

From May 29 to June 4, Tourism Mississauga and the City of Mississauga are recognizing Tourism Week. The City is joining the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) in recognizing the resilience and tenacity of the tourism industry and its workers on the road to recovery and encouraging Mississauga residents and visitors to support local tourism businesses across the city and Travel Now: For Work, Life and Play!

“With over 1,800 restaurants representing food from more than 150 countries, as well as many charming local shops and businesses and wonderful welcoming people, there are so many great reasons to visit our city,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Our businesses have demonstrated incredible resilience and ingenuity over the past two years, and now is our opportunity to support them as they continue to recover. I encourage residents to plan a staycation and be tourists right here in Mississauga, and I look forward to welcoming back visitors to our great city.”

If residents would like to take part locally in Tourism Week, here are some ideas to support local #MississaugaMade tourism businesses across the city:

  • Support a local restaurant by dining in or ordering takeout
  • Check out a new attraction in Mississauga
  • Purchase tickets to an upcoming event or festival
  • Book an overnight stay at a local hotel (and take advantage of the Ontario Staycation Tax Credit and Tourism Mississauga’s It Pays to Stay promotion)
  • Follow @VisitMississauga on social for more staycation itinerary ideas

Businesses can also show their support on social for Tourism Week 2022:

  • Light it Up Green on May 31, 2022 and share a picture using the hashtags #GreenMeansGo #VisitMississauga
  • Change your business profile pic to the TIAC logo
  • Share the Tourism Week message and video on social #TourismWeekCanada2022
  • Join #MississaugaMade and add your business to the online marketplace directory

“There is no better time to visit Mississauga or plan a fun staycation in our exciting city,” said Toni Frankfurter, Chair, Tourism Mississauga.  “With so many beautiful spots, great attractions and a variety of fabulous restaurants with delicious food, along with incentives like the Ontario Staycation Tax Credit and Tourism Mississauga’s It Pays to Stay promotion, now’s the time to check out all we have to offer.”

The City will light the Civic Centre Clock Tower green on May 31 to mark Tourism Week. Community partners including the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Malton Business Improvement Association (BIA), the Port Credit BIA and the Port Credit Lighthouse will also show their support for Tourism Week by Lighting Up Green.

“Now that most restrictions have lifted, it’s more important than ever for us to support our local tourism industry,” said Victoria Clarke, Chief Executive Officer, Tourism Mississauga.  “Prior to COVID-19, tourism was responsible for nearly 1 in 10 jobs and $105 billion in annual spending in Canada. Tourism was the first industry hit by the pandemic. It was the hardest hit and will be the last to recover. Pre-COVID, tourism was a leading economic driver in Mississauga and the industry is not expected to fully recover until 2025. We’re working to accelerate recovery as much as possible in Mississauga and are ready to welcome residents and visitors to enjoy all of the great things our city has to offer.”
