Updates from Council – June 11, 2015

During yesterday’s Council meeting, Members of Council approved voting in a Chair for the Planning and Development Committee and creating a standardized template for the Terms of Reference for the City’s Advisory Committees. Both items were first brought forward from discussions at Governance Committee.

Chair for the Planning and Development Committee

Members of Council appointed Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson as the new Chair for the Planning and Development Committee. The decision also included that the newly elected Chair would hold the seat for a one-year term. Before this, Councillors would rotate as Committee Chair.

The Committee is responsible for fulfilling the requirements of the Planning Act. It provides an opportunity for the public to express their views on planning related policies and development applications. Recommendations made by the Planning and Development Committee are forwarded to Council for consideration. The Committee also considers planning related policies and conditions under which site specific development can occur.

Terms of Reference for Advisory Committees

Additionally during yesterday’s meeting, Council approved the use of a standardized template for all for Advisory Committees. A corporate report brought forward by Gary Kent, Commissioner of Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer, confirms that the template offers a consistent approach to information outlined in the Terms of Reference documents. The template provides a clear understanding of the Committee’s mandate, priorities and responsibilities.

The Terms of Reference for the following Advisory Committees have been revised using the new template:

• Accessibility Advisory Committee
• Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee
• Environmental Action Committee
• Governance Committee
• Heritage Advisory Committee
• Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee
• Museums of Mississauga Advisory Committee
• Public Vehicle Advisory Committee
• Traffic Safety Council
• Towing Industry Advisory Committee

Each committee will have the opportunity to review, amend where required and approve the Terms of Reference. Any amendments made to the Terms of Reference will require Council’s approval.
