Overview
This project will widen a 6.7 kilometres stretch of Ninth Line from Eglinton Avenue West to Derry Road West to promote growth and allow more housing in the area.
The project work will involve:
- Rebuilding the road from two lanes of traffic (one lane each way) to four lanes (two lanes each way)
- Adding curbs, gutters, sidewalks and cycle tracks
- Improving storm drainage, street lighting, transit stops, intersections and traffic signal infrastructure
An environmental assessment was completed in 2021.
Work details
The scope of work includes, but is not limited to:
- Preparing, clearing and grubbing the site
- Excavating the road, placing granular material and asphalt pavement, rehabilitating pavement
- Installing the culvert structures, curbs, sidewalks, cycle tracks, centre median islands, splash pads, bus shelter pads and platforms, catch basins, temporary and permanent traffic signals, street lighting and pavement markings
- Relocating utility plants and infrastructure
- Landscaping and tree planting
Tree planting and protection
The City used independent consultants to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the trees in the area. The result was the creation of a detailed arborist report and tree protection plan (found in document library).
Following a thorough inventory, it was confirmed that no species at risk, heritage, memorial, or any other trees with special status were found.
Trees in the area that are not directly impacted by the road widening will be protected to reduce any potential injury.
Some trees will need to be removed but a replanting strategy has been proposed to revitalize the Ninth Line streetscape and ensure a more vibrant corridor for our community.
This project will also involve the rehabilitation and improvement of the triple-cell culvert bridge structure (a drainage structure with equal-sized openings) beneath Ninth Line, at the outlet of the Osprey Marsh stormwater pond to the Sixteen Mile Creek. This work includes:
- Rehabilitating the waterproofing components
- Extending the existing triple-cell culvert structure to accommodate the road widening
- Adding a fourth culvert cell to increase flow capacity and protect the road from water overflow during a storm event
These improvements are necessary to accommodate the road widening, which is needed to support the increased traffic flow once the adjacent lands are developed with houses.
