Overview

Based on a review of Peel Regional Police collision reports, 9 out of 10 serious collisions happen on busy high-speed roads. About 70% of deaths and injuries that involve people walking or cycling occur at intersections.

We created the Ready Now Intersection Safety Improvements program to lower the number of collisions, deaths and injuries at these locations.

Program details

The program focuses on intersections where safety improvements are needed most. These temporary solutions help drivers slow down when turning. This makes it easier for them to see people walking or cycling.

We’ll start with adding safety features at these selected major intersections:

  • Eglinton Avenue East and Tomken Road (Wards 3 and 5)
  • Catalpa Road and Morning Star Drive (Ward 5)
  • Eglinton Avenue West and Creditview Road (Ward 6)

We chose these intersections based on the number of collisions, how busy they are and road design features like the number of lanes and layout.

Road safety improvements

We use temporary materials that are quickly installed and easily changed or adjusted. These include:

  • Temporary curbs to tighten right turns
  • Flexible posts to narrow turning areas
  • Low speed bumps to slow left turns
  • New bicycle signals and crossrides
  • Improved pavement markings to increase visibility
  • Line markings to guide drivers making turns

After installation, the City plans to track results over the next 6 to 12 months to see if these changes improve road safety. This will help us plan permanent road safety features across the city.
