Outdoor maintenance subsidy for residents with low income

The City offers a subsidy to help recoup the cost of outdoor maintenance service fees for eligible seniors with low incomes and people with disabilities with low incomes.

You can claim a subsidy for services you’ve paid for including (but not limited to) yard work, tree and garden maintenance and snow removal.

Who can apply

You may be eligible to receive a subsidy for outdoor maintenance services you’ve paid for, if you meet the following conditions:

  • Are at least 65 years old, or have a disability
  • Qualify as having low income
  • You own or rent the property, or you’re married to the property owner
  • The property you’re claiming expenses for must be your primary residence
  • Receive benefits under the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) program or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) during the year you’re claiming the subsidy
  • Have proof of payment or a receipt for maintenance services you’re claiming

Who can't apply

You are not eligible for the outdoor maintenance subsidy if:

  • Someone over the age of 16 lives at the property and can perform outdoor maintenance services at the property
  • You live in an apartment building or condominium where outdoor maintenance is handled by building management

Application deadline

The subsidy covers the entire year, from January 1 to December 31. If you want to apply for the subsidy for a particular year, your deadline to apply is March 31 of the following year for services you paid for between January and December.

How to apply

Follow these steps to apply:

  1. Complete the Outdoor Maintenance Subsidy Application Form
  2. Prepare supporting documents:
    • For seniors receiving GIS benefits, a copy of your Statement of Old Age Security (T4A (OAS) slip) reflecting payments in Box 21 must be submitted with your application. The year of your T4A (OAS) slip must match the subsidy year.

The City may audit payment receipts and contact service providers to confirm details of services provided.
