Parking Regulations

Every municipality has by-laws governing where vehicles may or may not be parked. Although these rules vary from municipality to municipality, some are standard across the province. The following are some of the main offences for which tickets may be issued.

1. There is a seasonal no parking restriction on City streets from November 1st - March 31st between the hours of 2am - 6am. Posted extended hour parking areas such as 15 hour parking is exempt and a maximum of three hour parking is allowed at all other times unless otherwise posted. This is set out on signs posted at all entrances to the City.

2. No permits are issued in the City to permit "on-street parking."

3. Parking on City boulevards, whether paved or grass, is not permitted. This includes the paved portion between the sidewalk and the street.

4. Vehicles parked in prohibited areas, facing the wrong direction, advertised for sale, or immobile or unlicensed are not permitted on City streets.

5. Vehicles parked or stopped on sidewalks are not permitted.

6. Vehicles parked in such a way as to obstruct driveways are not permitted.

7. Vehicles parked or stopped on designated fire routes are not permitted.

8. Parking within 3 metres of a fire hydrant is prohibited.

9. No person may park or leave a vehicle on private property without consent of the owner or occupant of the property.

10. No person may park a heavy vehicle having a gross weight of 3,000 kg (3 tonnes) or greater on any City street in a residential zone.

11. No person may park a vehicle in a space designated for persons with disabilities without displaying a valid disabled person's permit or special licence plate.

Any vehicles found in contravention of the by-laws may be served with a ticket and/or towed away at the owner's expense. Parking violation fines vary from $20.00 to $350.00 and in the event that the fine is not paid within the time frame specified on the ticket, the matter is dealt with by the Ontario Court, at which time court costs may be added.
