Apply for a noise exemption

If you’re planning an activity or event that’s going to create a lot of noise during a certain timeframe, you can apply for an exemption to the Noise Control By-law in advance.

Noise types eligible for exemption

You’ll need to apply for an exemption if your event will include a live band, music or amplified sound from:

  • 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. every day of the week

You’ll need to apply for an exemption if you are a construction company and wish to operate construction equipment outside of regular hours from Monday to Saturday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Construction noise is prohibited all day Sundays and on statutory holidays.

How to apply

Submit a completed Noise Exemption Application and $294.42 fee (includes HST) by mail, email or in person. The fee is payable by cheque, debit, Visa, Mastercard, e-transfer, and American Express.

We must receive your application a minimum of six weeks before your exemption date.

In person

To submit your application in person, schedule an appointment to visit the Licensing, Permits & Regulatory Services office on the ground floor through the west entrance at 950 Burnhamthorpe Road West.

What happens next

  • Once we receive your application, we’ll create and send you a notice to let local residents know about your exemption. You’ll need to distribute this notice to all residents within a 120-metre radius from the event location. We’ll send you a list of addresses within the specific area.
  • You must notify city staff once your notices have been distributed.
  • City staff will do random checks to confirm that the notice has been circulated.
  • Local residents will then have two weeks to contact the City to voice their concerns, objections or comments about the event.
  • A final decision will be made on whether to grant the exemption. If granted, terms and conditions may be applied.

Noise exemption for construction

In addition to the steps above, if your application is approved you will be required to distribute a final notification to residence within 1 week of commencement of work. This notification will be provided to you by staff.

Noise exemption for amplified sound

Additional terms and conditions may be applied including a decibel limit to a maximum of 85 dB(A) or 105 dB(C) measured form the lot line of the property where the event is occurring.
