Green thumbs ready? The annual Mississauga Seed Library blooms on February 28

Cultivate your curiosity as the Mississauga Seed Library returns this Saturday, February 28, at Hazel McCallion Central Library! The Seed Library is a free annual event that supports sustainable food systems, encourages seed saving and promotes healthy local biodiversity. It brings residents together as part of Mississauga Library’s efforts to nurture civic engagement and lifelong learning.

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just sprouting your green thumb, there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with more than a dozen exhibitors ready to share their expertise. Pick up new skills at fun and interactive workshops, including:

• Design your own native pollinator garden that helps sustain our local ecosystem with Blooming Boulevards.
• Learn essential tips to successfully start a wide variety of plants with Master Gardeners.
• Discover how to turn everyday kitchen scraps into living soil for your garden with Amanda Hunter, the Worm Wrangler.
• And much more to discover!

When the celebration ends, your green adventure begins! Starting at 3 p.m., visit mississaugalibrary.ca/seeds to fill out the form and reserve your free seeds for pick-up at any library location.

What

The Mississauga Library’s Seed Library is a free, annual community program that allows residents to borrow seeds to grow food and flowers at home.

When

The Seed Library launches on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 10 a.m. The form to request your free seeds opens later that day at 3 p.m.

Cost

Free to attend with no registration required. Open to all ages and experience levels.

Make a seed donation

We encourage seed donations to help ensure that the seed library is self-sustaining. When growing season ends, harvest your seeds and bring some back to the library to help provide for the next cycle. Make sure to clean and label your seeds with the type of plant, the year and the location where it was grown.

Donated seeds must be:

• Open-pollinated (pollinated naturally by wind, insects or other natural means)
• Non-hybrid
• Not genetically modified/non-GMO
• Heirloom seeds (seeds from plants grown and saved over multiple generations)

The Mississauga Seed Library has grown to more than 1,000 members and gave out thousands of seed packets last year. It continues to become more popular as more residents participate and embrace the joys of home gardening.
