Apply for a building renovator licence

A building renovator is someone who works or looks for work altering, repairing or renovating buildings, structures or chimneys, or constructing radiation fallout shelters. It doesn’t include a building contractor whose main business is new construction.

Your licence expires annually, one year from the date it’s issued. A renewal notice will be sent to the email address on file. If no email is available, it’ll be mailed to you.

Requirements

You must be 18 years of age or older to apply.

Written test

Every applicant for a building renovator licence must pass a three-hour written test that tests your knowledge of the Ontario Building Code. You should set aside the whole day for the test. You can start an online licence application before completing the test.

To write the test:

  • Book an appointment to take the test
  • Pay the test fee in person when you write the test or with your online application
  • Come to the appointment to write the test

The test is written at Licensing, Permits and Regulatory Services, located at 950 Burnhamthorpe Road West.

You don’t need to rewrite the test to renew your licence.

  • If you’re an employee of the company and not its director, you also need a letter of employment showing at least two years of practical experience
