Hazel McCallion Line LRT construction update shared with Council

Movie nights will expand to neighbourhood parks

Council approved a motion to bring outdoor movie nights to more neighbourhood parks across Mississauga, starting in summer 2027. The program aims to create free, local events that help neighbours connect, especially families.

  • Parks staff will procure a vendor to provide movie projection, sound and film licensing for summer 2027 events.
  • Multiple parks in each ward will be identified as potential movie night locations.

Open-air burning rules updated to improve safety and recognize ceremonial fires

Council approved changes to the City’s open-air burning rules to improve public safety, respond to air quality risks and recognize cultural and ceremonial practices.

Key points of the report:

  • Ceremonial fires are now allowed without a permit, when conducted according to established cultural protocols.
  • The Fire Chief can issue city-wide open-air burning restrictions during high-risk conditions, such as extreme heat or poor air quality.
  • During a city-wide restriction, most open-air burning is prohibited, but ceremonial and cooking fires are still allowed.
  • The bylaw now aligns with provincial air quality advisories, such as wildfire smoke alerts.
  • The changes do not create new fees and have no financial impact.

2026 property tax rates and due dates approved

Council approved Mississauga’s 2026 property tax rates and confirmed when residents and businesses must pay their final property tax bills.

Key points of the report:

  • The average residential property tax increase is 5.2 per cent, including the Region of Peel portion.
  • The City’s share of the increase is about 1.6 per cent, with the remaining increase from the Region of Peel.
  • Residential property tax payments are due July 2, August 6 and September 3, 2026.
  • Non-residential property taxes are due August 6, 2026.
  • The City approved a $789.7 million municipal property tax levy to fund City services in 2026.

Mississauga moves ahead with a twin-city partnership with Ternopil, Ukraine

Council endorsed a proposal to establish a twin-city partnership between Mississauga and Ternopil, Ukraine. The partnership aims to build cultural, community and economic connections and support cooperation between the two cities.

Key points of the presentation:

  • Ternopil is a city of about 230,000 residents in western Ukraine with a long history and diverse economy.
  • The partnership would support cooperation in areas such as culture, youth programs, education, sports and economic development.
  • Similar twin-city agreements already exist between other Canadian and Ukrainian cities.

Additional funding approved for Cooksville Creek erosion repairs

Council approved more funding to repair erosion along Cooksville Creek, south of Lakeshore Road East. The project will also rebuild nearby trails and drainage. It will help protect nearby homes, improve safety and reduce flooding risks.

  • Council approved $2.3 million in additional funding, bringing the total project budget to $9.8 million.
  • The project includes stabilizing creek banks, rebuilding the Helen Molasy Trail, and replacing failed backyard drainage pipes.
  • Extensive tree planting and ecological restoration will also be completed along the creek.
  • Construction is planned to begin later in 2026, following permits and approvals.
  • Council also approved a contract increase for Aquafor Beech Ltd. to oversee construction and inspections.

Seasonal patio permit fee approved

Council approved a new seasonal permit fee for outdoor patios located on public sidewalks and road allowances. The fee helps cover the cost of managing the patio program while keeping rates lower than in nearby cities.

Key points of the report:

  • A $300 seasonal patio permit fee will apply starting in the 2026 patio season.
  • The fee applies to patios located on public sidewalks and curb lanes.
  • The amount is lower than patio fees in many GTA municipalities, which range from about $427 to $977.
